Number Crunching
Dear Atholton Community,
We're about a month into the 3rd marking period and, if it hasn't already been done, students are running the numbers to figure out what they need to pass their classes. To help you/your student with the calculations, here's an excerpt from the HCPSS Grading & Reporting Policy:
Final grades in high school credited courses will be determined by translating the letter grade for each marking period and State end-of-course assessment where applicable, using the following quality points scale:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
E = 0
1.0 or more credit courses
Multiply the quality points for each marking period grade by two. Add the quality points for each assessment grade. Compute the sum and divide by ten.
For reporting purposes, the quotient will be converted to a letter grade using the following scale:
A = 3.50-4.00
B = 2.50-3.49
C = 1.50-2.49
D = 0.75-1.49
E = Below 0.75 (No Credit)
Note: The average for a D must be 0.75 (not 0.5) to 1.49 in order for credit to be awarded.
Example: A student earns an A in quarter 1, B in quarter 2, B on the mid-term assessment, B in quarter 3, an A in quarter 4, and an A on the final assessment: Student’s grade would be 4(A)X2=8, 3(B)X2=6, 3(B)X1=3, 3(B)X2=6, 4(A)X2=8, 4(A)X1=4. 8+6+3+6+8+4=35 divided by 10 = 3.5. Final Grade A.
Semester courses (0.5 credit courses)
Multiply the quality points for each marking period grade by two and compute their sum. Add the quality points for the assessment grade and divide by five.
For reporting purposes, the quotient will be converted to a letter grade using the following scale:
A = 3.50-4.00
B = 2.50-3.49
C = 1.50-2.49
D = 0.75-1.49
E = Below 0.75 (No Credit)
Note: The average for a D must be 0.75 (not 0.5) to 1.49 in order for credit to be awarded.
Example: Student earns a C in one marking period, a B the second marking period, and a C on the midterm: Student’s grade would be 2(C)X2=4, 3(B)X2=6, 2(C)X1=2. 4+6+2=12 divided by 5 = 2.4. Final Grade C.
Students should remember that they can't earn 2 E's in the 2nd semester. That is an automatic failure. If you or your student has any questions, please reach out to a teacher, counselor, or administrator to discuss. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Nick Novak
Principal

Help AHS Recycle More and Earn a New Trex Bench
Send in your plastic bags and plastic over wrap (around water bottle cases) with your student and have them place it in one of their teachers' Plastic Bag Recycling Bins or the Big White Recycling Bin in the vestibule out front. You could help the Green team earn a New Trex Bench! You would also be saving all of the plastic bags and plastic film from the landfill Not sure what can be recycled? Check out the flyer below. Any Questions about this program, see Mrs. Schwab.
Attendance at Extra Curricular Events
With playoffs coming up, we wanted to take a moment to remind parents about how student behavior can impact extracurricular event attendance. Students are expected to follow the HCPSS Student Code of Conduct. In instances when a student violates the student code of conduct, the administrative team may deem it necessary to prohibit student attendance to future extracurricular activities. This may include, but not be limited to, dances, athletic events, concerts, performing arts plays/musicals, and club sponsored activities. The administrative team will notify students and parents/guardian in advance of these actions.

New Attendance Kiosks
HCPSS is equipping all high schools with attendance kiosks to help expedite the check-in/attendance procedure in the morning. Beginning March 5th, all students will need to be prepared to use the attendance kiosks if they are late to school/class first period. Here's what you need to know/do:
- Students should report directly to class before 7:50am.
- Anyone arriving after 7:50am will need to check-in at the attendance kiosks in the front lobby.
- To use the attendance kiosk, students will need to download the Synergy Student Vue app on their phone (available for Apple and Android operating systems).
- Students without phones will be issued a barcode to use for check-in.
- Once students check-in, they will receive a printed pass to take to class.
- Excuse notes can still be emailed to ahsabsence@hcpss.org or sent in with students.
We will be sharing more information with students and using time during Raidertime/class to ensure students are prepared for the March 5th roll-out of the attendance kiosks. Thanks for taking time to help make sure your student uses the file below to download the app.
