The Message..
Hello Hornet Nation!
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our parents and students for making the first week of school such a success! Your support has been invaluable, especially with our new cell phone policy. We anticipated challenges, but it's clear that parents have had important conversations with their students about keeping phones away. With nearly 1,800 students at Great Mills High School, we only confiscated 51 phones last week. This shows that in true Hornet spirit, our students are rising to the occasion and adapting to change!
We kicked off the school year with a beautiful Senior Sunrise event, where almost the entire senior class gathered at 6:00 AM last Wednesday to celebrate the start of their final year together. It was a wonderful way to bond with friends and staff. Last week was a positive experience for everyone, including our Freshmen, who are navigating one of the biggest transitions of their lives. By Friday, the hallways were noticeably empting much faster as they began to familiarize themselves with their schedules and classroom locations. We’re excited to see what this school year holds for all of us!
This week, we are starting Nest Hour, also known as One-Hour Lunch. To help our Freshmen adjust, we are implementing a new approach. While 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will enjoy the full Nest Hour, our Freshmen will participate in a "boot camp" during the first half (Green Lunch) in their 5th-period classes. This will provide them with guidance on expectations and how Nest Hour can support their growth as students. Freshmen will transition to full Nest Hour on September 18th.
Please remember that Nest Hour is not a time for wandering the hallways. Students are expected to be in a designated location within the first 10 minutes of each half. We offer various options during both Green and Gold halves, including tutoring, clubs, intramural sports, open classrooms, and quiet spaces.
The week will be what you make it, so let’s make it GREAT together!
We Are… GREAT MILLS
