AVID at Gascon Elementary School
At Joseph Gascon Elementary School, we teach the AVID strategies in all of our third, fourth and fifth grade classes. By teaching academic language, responsible behavior and higher-level thinking at a young age, we are helping our students develop and solidify the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, college and beyond. On Mondays we hang our college flags outside every classroom and throuhout the year, students create projects around different college campuses. Our goal is to provide an academic foundation the students will need to be on a path for college and career success.
District-Wide Strategy for the month of October is Focused Note-Taking
This October, our district is focusing on enhancing students' learning through Focused Note-Taking. This strategy consists of five key phases designed to help students effectively process and retain information:
- Format: Encouraging students to think about how they organize their notes.
- Processing: Utilizing various annotations to engage with the material.
- Connecting: Employing leveled questions to deepen their understanding.
- Summarizing: Reflecting on what they’ve learned.
- Applying: Using their notes to support ongoing work and assignments.
By integrating these phases, we aim to empower our students to take ownership of their learning and improve their academic performance. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to practice these skills at home!
CA-ISP PBIS: Family Engagement
Dear Families/Caregivers,
Our instructional team values your communication and participation as equal partners and seeks to strengthen our two-way communication channels. Did you know that our school offers multiple ways to stay connected?
Here are some of the platforms we use:
- Google Classroom
- Class Dojo
- Blackboard Messages
We encourage you to utilize these channels to stay informed and engaged with our school community. Your involvement is essential to our students' success!
Red Ribbon Week: October 23-31
Harvest Festival: October 25
This year we are bringing the Halloween fun to Joseph A. Gascón Elementary School. Watch as your kids have a bewitching good time dodging and screaming through monster infested darkness and fog. This year we’re releasing all sorts of terrors that are ready to scare, terrify, and bemuse. Our Halloween maze is not for the faint of heart!!!! We will also have 7 fun filled booths for you and your families to enjoy. Our booths will include face painting, dessert spin, Tic Tac Toe ball throw, (golf) pumpkin putting, a fun Tiger Holding Cage, and a football tire toss. Don’t get left out of the fun!! Tickets are required for this event. Each ticket will cost $1. Remember that all money raised goes back into Joseph Gascón Elementary School. Please come and support us. Purchase advance tickets at our School Office.
Halloween Trunk or Treat: October 31
CALLING ALL TIGER FAMILIES... We need your help in making our Trunk or Treat a big success and super fun time for our children. We are asking each JGE Family to PLEASE donate 1 large bag of candy (or more). You can send the candy to school with your child. Please make sure the candy you donate is individually wrapped. We would love to have 100% family participation. Your donations will be a big help in making this event successful! We are anticipating a large number of children and we want to make sure we have enough candy to share with our Trunk-or-Treaters!!
Also, we need one parent per class to volunteer to decorate their car and give out candy during our Trunk or Treat. If you are interested, please speak to your child's teacher and sign up. Thank you again help us make this event a ‘fun’tastic Halloween celebration for our children.
Halloween Costume Parade: October 31
We’re excited to announce our Halloween Parade on Thursday, October 31, 2024! Students are invited to wear their costumes to school. Please remember that costumes should be age-appropriate and adhere to the following guidelines:

We appreciate your support in ensuring that this is a fun and safe activity for all students at Gascón Elementary School. Thank you for your cooperation!

i-Ready Diagnostic Window 1
As you may know, the Montebello Unified School District has adopted the iReady Diagnostic & Instruction program for this school year in grades K-5. This adaptive assessment allows us to evaluate students' progress in reading and math three times a year—beginning, middle, and end.
We are pleased to report that all students have completed their first diagnostic, and we can now use the results to tailor individualized online and classroom instruction based on each student’s unique needs.
We’re especially proud to share that 89 students scored at or above grade level in either reading or math on their first diagnostic! These outstanding students were recognized last month, and we celebrate their achievements once again. We look forward to seeing even more students reach this milestone as the year progresses.
