Irving Elementary Weekly Update
Week of February 3rd
Principal Message
Irving Families -
Thank you to everyone who came out to Family Movie Night on Friday! The students had a great time watching Ice Age together, and all proceeds from the concessions will go toward our fifth-grade end-of-the-year activities.
Last week, our students learned all about this year’s One School, One Book program during our assemblies. So far, it seems like they are really enjoying Wishtree! We encourage families to follow along with us at home—you can find all the program’s information HERE.
February marks the beginning of Black History Month! This year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History has chosen the theme African Americans and Labor. Each day, students will learn about an important African American figure who made significant contributions to labor movements. Later this month, our students will attend a whole-school assembly by Brondihouse, where they will learn about influential international Black historical figures, including:
- Yasuke – The first Black samurai in Japan
- General Alex Dumas – A renowned French general who led a brigade of over 50,000 soldiers in the 18th century. He was also the father of the famous French author Alexandre Dumas, known for The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
- Emperor Lucius Septimius Severus – The first Black emperor of the Roman Empire
- Matthew Alexander Henson – One of the first explorers to reach the North Pole
- General Abram Gannibal – A trusted advisor to Peter the Great in Russia, often referred to as “the son of Peter the Great.”
Looking ahead, we have a PTO meeting on Wednesday at 6:00 PM in the teacher’s lounge. Childcare will be provided, so we hope to see you there!
Lastly, a reminder that Quarter 2 progress reports were emailed home on Friday. If you did not receive yours, please reach out to the school office.

Upcoming Events
5th Grade EOY Celebrations
At Irving Elementary, our core values—supporting one another, including everyone, and fostering strong relationships—guide us in celebrating milestones together. As we approach the end of the school year, we’re excited to plan memorable experiences for our fifth graders, including:
- End-of-year trip to Scene 75
- 5th grade t-shirts
- Yearbooks to commemorate their final year
- 5th Grade Farewell Ceremony and Clap Out
The total cost for these activities is approximately $60 per student. While the funds raised will help lower the cost for all students and ensure that no one misses out, we’re also focused on giving our fifth graders meaningful service learning opportunities by having them actively participate in the fundraising process. These experiences will teach them valuable lessons about responsibility, teamwork, and giving back to their community.
Planned Fundraising Events
