June 22, 2023
Hello Barrington Families;
Congratulations to our 8th graders who will be participating in tonight’s Celebration at 6pm at the Barrington Middle School. We wish them all the best as they embark on their high school experiences. Well Done!
As a reminder, tomorrow is the last day of school for all K - 8 Barrington students. The schedule for dismissal is:
Early Dismissal Schedule (for 6/23/2023)
Middle School: 11:30am dismissal
Elementary School: 12:25pm dismissal
Early Childhood Learning Center: 12:25pm dismissal
Another change to note, our SAU office along with all three of our school buildings will be open five days a week throughout the summer. Office hours will be: Monday-Thursday 7:30-4:30 and Fridays 8:00-12:00. We hope that these expanded hours will be helpful.
For your calendars: As we look toward next school year, it is important to note that the start and end times for our schools have been changed in order to extend the length of school day by 15 minutes. I know that this seems like a tiny adjustment however, 15 minutes a day of additional academic instruction equates to 44.5 hours over the course of the school year. This is significant! Here are the new times:
Middle School: 7:25am - 2:15pm
Elementary School: 8:25am - 2:55pm
Early Childhood Learning Center:
Kindergarten - 8:25am - 2:55pm
Morning PreSchool - 8:25am - 11am
Afternoon PreSchool - 12pm - 2:55pm
Why are we extending the school day? There are several reasons for this decision with academic need and school preparedness being at the forefront. Additionally, Barrington students have one of the shortest school days as compared to other elementary and middle schools. You may recall in my Welcome Back letter for the 22/23 school year I noted that we had weaknesses in Language Arts, Math, and school readiness and social skills. Given that these needs are still present, we are seeking ways to obtain as much direct, targeted teaching time as possible.
Another proven impact on academic achievement is student attendance. The state of New Hampshire defines truancy as 10 half days absent.
I need all of you to help us do better! As of yesterday, June 21st, the following attendance data was pulled from our system. We have approximately half of our student population who have missed between 11 and 30 full days of school. This is astounding! We will be correlating student achievement data to absences over the summer. I am guessing that we will find a direct correlation between solid attendance and positive test scores. Please keep an eye out over the summer for more information.
Also for next year: Mr. Safina, Middle School Principal, will be sending out communications to families throughout the summer regarding a Code of Conduct. A team of Middle School staff, in conjunction with the Student Council, have collaborated throughout this school year to develop clear expectations in a formalized Code of Conduct. We look forward to the consistency that this will provide.
Thank you all for an incredible first year as your Superintendent. I have learned so much and look forward to continuing to stretch my brain!
I appreciate you! Barrington is an amazing community!
