From Ms. O's Desk
Dear Quetzal Families,
As we close out another memorable school year, we want to wish you all a safe, joyful, and restful summer! Thank you for being such an important part of the Mistral community. Your partnership and support help make our school a nurturing, inclusive place where all students can thrive.
Mark your calendars!
- Join us for our Back-to-School Ice Cream Social and Class Posting on Tuesday, August 12 at 5:00 PM.
- The first day of school is Wednesday, August 13, with a minimum day schedule. Students will be dismissed at 11:55 AM.
Staffing Updates
With both sadness and deep gratitude, we share that Maestra Esther will be taking a one-year leave. We will miss her dearly and wish her all the best during this time. In her place, we are excited to welcome Maestra Sosa, who will teach STEAM for grades K–2.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. James Quinn from Crittenden Middle School to our 3rd-grade team! We also say goodbye with heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Jasen, our school counselor, who will be moving on to support students at Crittenden. We are thrilled to welcome Penelope Cifuentes from Castro, who will join us as our new school counselor. She brings great experience and warmth, and we know she will be a wonderful support for our students.
We are also very happy to welcome Yesica Daza to our special education resource position. We are so happy to have her with us as part of the education team! It is with great sadness that we share Esmeralda Nuñez, our At-Risk Coordinator, will not be returning next year. She will be focusing on completing her master’s degree in special education, and we wish her all the best in this exciting journey. We also want to send our best wishes to Maestra León, who will be taking on a new role next year as a newcomer teacher. Finally, we welcome Maestra Ohlfs to our 4th grade team!
Mistral Traffic & Parking Update
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued care when it comes to keeping our students safe during busy drop-off and pick-up times. This year has brought new challenges with more students and staff participating in after-school programs and increased neighborhood development. We appreciate our families and staff who consistently help monitor and improve the traffic flow and parking experience.
Here’s what we’re working on to improve traffic and safety:
- Clearer Signage: New signs for drop-off, pick-up, and parking are on the way to help guide drivers more clearly.
- Summer Maintenance: Our maintenance team will seal the parking lots and repaint all lines, arrows, and pedestrian pathways to improve visibility and flow.
- Driveway Adjustment: Starting next year, the driveway closest to California Street will be exit-only.
- Traffic Light Timing: The District Office is submitting a request to the City to adjust the traffic light timing at California Street to help with before and after-school congestion.
We will continue to:
- Educate families on following all traffic and parking rules for student safety.
- Coordinate with Castro School to stagger large events and minimize crowding.
- Leave friendly reminders for neighbors to move vehicles before 7:00 a.m. to maintain flow and access.
- Thank you for being a part of a caring and safety-conscious community. Together, we’re making Mistral a safer and smoother place for all!
Have a fantastic summer. We look forward to seeing you in August!
Claudia Olaciregui, Principal
