News from P.E.!
Our kindergarten classes have been learning all types of new games and developing skills in the process. The students were introduced to scooter activities. They learned how to safely use a scooter and participated in scooter hockey. Right now, they are bowling at the Lilja school bowling alleys. Each student is learning how to roll the ball in a straight line, and how to share bowling jobs with another classmate. They must set-up the pins, keep score, and sweep the pins away.
First graders continue to make progress in all areas of class. The first graders played a variety of scooter games and activities during the month of January. Scooter hockey and scooter ball were among their favorites. They are now candlepin bowling and learning how to write down their scores. The Lilja School bowling alleys are now open to all levels. Each student is working on either taking the position of bowler, sweeper, or gutter guard.
Second graders received an in-depth discussion on the use of scooters and how they can be used in a variety of games. They loved playing scooter tag and also scooter pin knockdown. The month of February also saw the opening of the Lilja bowling alleys. The class discussed how to swing their arm and step with their opposite foot to make a smooth bowling motion.
Our Third graders have continued to make giant steps in improving their jump rope skills throughout the year. They are now working on refining their technique. In bowling, the third graders were introduced to a three step approach and the mechanics involved in the process. The class also touched on score keeping in bowling and how to correctly input their scores on a scorecard.
Our fourth grades have been working on their agility and footwork patterns using an exercise device called a penalty box. They are also participating in fitness routines to get their hearts pumping. Last month, the students were involved in games utilizing scooters. These games required strategy and cooperation among team members to achieve common team goals. The students are now bowling and learning how to perform a 3,5, and 7 step approach while using a smooth bowling motion. There are three students at each lane and they are excited about the challenge!
The American Heart Association’s “Kids Heart Challenge” has begun. Let’s all be heart heroes!

District Report Card
Dear Families:
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the district and school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our district’s report card is available here.
In addition to the district report card, each school receives a report card. Please select the school that your child attends to review that school’s report card.
The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.
Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.
We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Finally, if your child attends a school that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:
· Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
· Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
· The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
· Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher, please contact your building principal.
Are you interested in supporting the Lilja community, but not sure where to start? Here are two ways to get involved:
- The Lilja Carnival Committee: The Lilja Carnival will be held on the last day of school (now 6/14 with the one snow day) and is our biggest fundraising event of the year! It is also a great community event that the kids look forward to as they kick off summer vacation. In the past, money raised has gone towards supporting school wide events and teachers' mini grant applications for their classroom. Carnival Committee involvement includes meetings/prep work prior to the event and participation day of.
- Yearbook: Are you interested in helping the Lilja community from the comfort of your own home? Shahnaz Islam, our amazing Yearbook Coordinator the last few years, is stepping down from this role after this year and we are searching for her replacement. She will provide guidance to get you off the ground and point you in the right direction to answer your questions.
