6th Grade
In sixth grade ILA, students will begin Unit 2: Natural Allies, where they will read various texts and participate in literature circles that center around our essential question: “How do people and animals relate to each other in significant ways?” Throughout the nine weeks, students will keep track of all of the human/animal interactions and relationships that they read about, and they will use that evidence to create an informational presentation at the end of the nine weeks.
This nine weeks, sixth grade world cultures students will study Latin America's environment and culture, including topics like cultural exchange, deforestation, and economic growth. They'll also explore Europe's physical and human features, government systems, modern culture, and industrialization. Students will also learn about Russia and Eurasia, covering issues like Chernobyl, the shrinking Aral Sea, contemporary culture, and post-Cold War changes.
In sixth grade math, we will convert within the customary measurements and the metric system. We will also introduce geometry to find the area of shapes including parallelograms, rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids. Get ready for an exciting Unit 3!
6th Grade Science will be learning about various forms of energy. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed; however, it can transform from one form to another. Students will also learn about kinetic energy and various forms of potential energy, such as gravitational and chemical. Students will also learn about the nature of forces and how they affect change and stability.
7th Grade
7th graders have been very adventurous this fall! Texas history classes have been traveling back in time to the Spanish Colonial era from 1680-1760 and the Mexican National era. This past week, we traveled to the year 1821; Mexico has won independence from Spain, and Texas is now part of Mexico. Students will be learning about empresarios (such as Stephen F. Austin) who began colonization of Mexican Texas with settlers from the United States in Unit 3.
Our 7th-grade scientists are diving into their Force and Motion unit! Students are exploring the concepts of speed and velocity through hands-on investigations and interpreting distance-time graphs. The unit will wrap up with an exciting study of Newton’s First Law of Motion, where students will apply their learning to understand the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on objects in motion.
Math will be starting the 2nd quarter with equations and inequalities which will complete module 2. Module 2 test will cover percents and equations & inequalities. Then students will dive into linear representations which will finish our 2nd quarter.
In ILA, we are in the midst of Unit 2 and discussing adversity through different people, settings, and time periods. It’s something our students can really relate to right now. Students are writing expository essays about this topic by focusing on writing a thesis that is supported by examples and evidence. Please encourage your student to read outside of class to help expand their expository writing skills and vocabulary--the science proves it makes a huge difference in their academic success!
8th Grade
8th grade ILA focused on our Unit 1 Essential Question: Is it possible to maintain your innocence when facing a challenge? Students examined various texts independently and with peers. They became authors of their unique story, weaving style, syntax, and figurative language to bring their words to life. And #InRealLife they collaborated, communicated, and responded to challenges where they made gains in all areas of literacy. Unit 2 will focus on inquiry-based research and the impact of societal topics. We can't wait to see what they discover!
This nine weeks in math, we'll be tackling the fascinating world of solving linear proportional and non-proportional situations, where numbers and equations come together like puzzle pieces to reveal the secrets behind real-life relationships and scenarios. Get ready for an exciting adventure in mathematics that promises to make problem-solving a family affair!
8th grade History students will continue to practice using evidence to support their assertions as they begin to investigate the road leading to the writing of the U.S. Constitution.
Finally, our 8th grade scientists will examine the impact of Earth's weather systems, uncovering how energy from the Sun, ocean, and atmosphere interact to influence climate and extreme weather events like hurricanes. After Thanksgiving they will explore how energy moves through waves, comparing amplitude, frequency, and wavelength, and learning about real-world applications like radiation therapy and wireless technology. They'll also dive into space, studying the life cycle of stars, classifying galaxies, and investigating scientific theories on the origin of the universe.
