Principal's Message
Great News!!! The Free Farmer's Market begins Wednesday, April 18 at 11:30 am in the back of the parking lot between Farragut and the Middle School, near the old adult school classrooms. It goes from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. If you are in need of some produce, you can get it there for free. Also, thank you to the students who have agreed to volunteer to help. A special thank you to the Family Alliance who is sponsoring this weekly program. Please take advantage of this great resource!!!
In last month's bulletin, you were informed that April 9 through April 13 was Adult Education Week and asked to think about how you could help promote the benefits of adult education. ABE News
Is there someone in your life who needs beginning reading instruction? Encourage them to come in and learn more about our English Language Arts 1 class (ELA 1), our class for developing readers. This class integrates one-on-one instruction in reading and writing using the Laubach Way to Reading series. Developing readers work with the teacher, aide, and volunteers to develop vocabulary and reading comprehension, learn about word parts, and practice writing. Even beginning readers can read short stories with this highly-structured program. ELA 1 is offered at the 12:00-2:30 time slot only.
ESL News
ESL students make a plan for when you can study and practice your English. Every unit is full of new vocabulary words and it takes practice to memorize them. Flash cards are a great way to practice new vocabulary. Spelling is also important. Pay attention to the little things and pretty soon, you'll be talking and laughing with friends and family--in English! Make a date with a friend to practice your new English vocabulary and have fun!
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA - HiSET INDEPENDENT LEARNING CENTER (ILC) News
In March, the ILC teachers decided to post the HiSET results on the bulletin board in the hall. We thought it would be a good way to follow the students’ progress. Our second goal was to motivate students when seeing their progress displayed. We were surprised how interested students became in checking their names and improvement! They are closely monitoring the results and let us know immediately if something is missing. Since the HiSET is not something done during class time, we are unaware when a student passes a test, and it has always been a problem to find out how students are progressing. The display gave our students an incentive; one more reason to complete the tests. Sometimes, as teachers, we forget that we all need a “pat on the back”, a word of encouragement, recognition for a job well done. Check out the bulletin board to see how many students are passing the test to receive their certificate!
