STAAR Testing is complete, and our staff and students did amazing! We now have some really fun units of study ahead as well as foundational skills for the grade ahead. Our students are feeling very proud of the learning they have accomplished this year!
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 6 - 10. A sweet treat, a kind note or student drawn pictures are all treasures for our teachers. Please take a minute this week to let our teachers know how very much you appreciate them! Don't forget our specials teachers, SPED teacher and interventionists who pour their heart into our students, too!
Nurse Appreciation Day is Wednesday, May 8th, and we are blessed with the best, Audrey Zuniga!

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL
Little Free Library!
Little Free Library
May 2024 Newsletter
Fun Fact: Mayo se considera el mes de la transición
de la primavera al verano.
May is a month filled with all kinds of celebrations. So, to honor the joy and happiness of this month, the Little Free Library is brimming with a variety of fantastic stories celebrating life and all its wonders. Travel to France with Flat Stanley. Enjoy an unusual friendship in Amigo by Byrd Baylor. Go back in time with Kate DiCamillo’s award winning story, Because of Winn-Dixie.
Also, JES would like to give a nod of thanks to our families who are donating books to our Little Free Library. Your generosity makes our library even more special.
We hope you will stop by the Little Free Library and take a book,
leave a book, or trade a book.
Let's reach that goal of 97% this week!
We have three weeks left of school! There are super fun activities and lessons planned for every day! Let's hit 97% every week! Your child's attendance is the most important factor in their success in school!
As always, if your child is running a fever or having diarrhea or vomiting, he/ she must stay home for 24 hours.

PRE-K
This week in Pre-K, we will be learning about changes that take place all around us, that everyone experiences change, some changes are small and some changes make a big impact. In math, we will be learning that events can be categorized as happening before, during, and after; time can be measured by minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months. In literacy, we will be recognizing rhyming words. We will also be learning that sentences begin with an uppercase letter and ends with a punctuation mark; words and pictures communicate thoughts and ideas, and lastly connecting text to personal experiences increases our understanding.
KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading:
Students will deep dive into informational and fiction text while focusing on explorers in our last unit. Students will demonstrate an understanding of key vocabulary while deepening their comprehension with graphic organizers and identify important information found in our read-alouds. We will continue describing plot elements, including the main events, problem and resolution. Students will also continue to make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society with adult assistance. Students will also discuss the topic of a read-aloud and determine the theme (the underlying message or idea) using text evidence.
Writing:
Students will explore informational writing by collecting and synthesizing information and then writing an informational paragraph. Synthesizing information is a process of analyzing and evaluating information from various sources, making connections, and combining the recently learned information with prior knowledge to create something new. Students will be using a graphic organizer to write a paragraph about adventures from our “adventure stories” in reading. Students will be working through a four step process to help organize their writing. The process will be brainstorming, asking questions, gathering information, and writing about the information.
Phonics:
We will continue with our last unit in phonics. We will continue reading from our new readers with a purpose and understanding and answer questions about key details in the text. Students will continue writing and decoding words with ‘ai’ as in wait and ‘ay’ as in day and review words with ‘a_e’ as in cake. We will continue reviewing nouns and verbs and the plural form of nouns with -s and -es. Students will use commas to separate single words in a series and will insert commas between words in printed sentences. Please continue to review the 4th nine weeks' sight words and the sight words from the previous nine weeks. We have completed our spelling tests for the year. Students will be taking their end of year I-Ready reading diagnostic to represent how much they have grown from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
Math:
We will continue with our unit over understanding numbers to 120. Students will be using manipulatives and pictures to determine the value of hundreds, tens and ones using addition and subtraction of two digit numbers. We will also be identifying pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters by their image, name, and value. Students will also count by twos, fives, and tens to determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, and/or dimes. Students will be taking their end of year I-Ready math diagnostic to represent how much they have grown from the beginning of the year to the end of the year
Social Studies:
We will begin our unit over culture to help students understand the importance of family and community beliefs, customs, language, and traditions. Students will be able to describe and explain the importance of various beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of families and communities.
2nd GRADE
In Math we will be learning about problem solving with coins and bills. In Reading we will be learning about writing paragraphs and the writing process. In Social Studies we will be learning about goods and services. Kid Biz is on May 17th for 2nd grade.
3rd GRADE
We are so proud of all of the 3rd graders for finishing their first year of STAAR Testing! We know that they tried their best and showed what they know and we couldn't be happier! This week in reading, we are continuing to learn about American Colonization through various reading skills. In math, we are growing our skills by reviewing skills we learned this year and learning a little bit more about it! In science, we will be continuing to learn about animal adaptations!
4th GRADE
In science, we are working on our unit over ecosystems. In math we are looking ahead at some math TEKS for 5th grade to get ahead and challenge our students to prepare them for next year. In language arts we continue our Hello Universe novel and studying characterization. Finally in social studies we learn about the impact of growth in Texas.
5th GRADE
Prepare for an exhilarating week ahead as our students dive headfirst into a whirlwind of literary exploration! This week is all about unleashing the power of perspective as we embark on a journey through the captivating realm of point of view. As our young scholars sharpen their analytical prowess by unraveling the mysteries of identifying opinions within texts, igniting a spark of critical thinking that will illuminate their path to academic excellence. Additionally, students will embark on a riveting quest to review evidence like seasoned detectives, piecing together clues to construct compelling arguments. This week will be an electrifying rollercoaster ride through the wonders of literature and language!
Continuing our commitment to student success, we're steadfast in teaching 6th-grade science skills to ensure our students are well-prepared for the challenges of the upcoming academic year. By focusing on these advanced concepts now, we're equipping them with the knowledge and confidence they need to thrive in their future science endeavors.
This week marks the beginning of our journey into 6th-grade math skills. With enthusiasm and determination, our students are ready to dive into new concepts and expand their mathematical horizons.
