School Newsletter Term 1, Week 10
Friday 5th April 2024
Kia Ora,
First and foremost, I want to extend a huge thank you to our dedicated road patrollers for their exceptional work in ensuring the safety of our school crossings. Their commitment to this essential duty is truly commendable, and we are fortunate to have such diligent individuals looking out for us.
I'm excited to announce that plans for further upgrades to our property are well underway. These enhancements will contribute to the overall improvement of our community facilities and create more opportunities for everyone to enjoy. I eagerly anticipate sharing more details with you as soon as the installation dates are confirmed.
On a different note, I'd like to take a moment to celebrate the achievements of our students. Over the past week, they have represented us admirably in various sporting events, including Girls Futsal and Rippa Rugby. Their dedication and sportsmanship make us proud of their accomplishments.
Thanks to our hardworking teachers who go above and beyond to support our students. From covering a multitude of duties throughout the week to organizing lunch club activities, they play a crucial role in nurturing our students' interests and talents. These lunch clubs provide valuable opportunities for our akonga to explore new arts, crafts, and technology while fostering creativity and curiosity in a supportive environment.
Over the past weekend the blossom tree was cut down due to the impact of it on the surrounding concrete, garden beds, draining and spouting of Rm 16. I am aware of the special significance of this area and will be removing the plaques to put them on the exterior wall of Room 8. This removes people from standing on them, and continues to give our past students a wonderful view of the playground and place for whanau to visit in remembrance while maintaining the condition of the plaques. A tree of the same kind will be planted elsewhere in the school so its growth is not a hindrance to our environment.
From the PTA:
Congratulations to Mr Wenham who won the Raffle of 5.3kg of chocolate treats. No doubt a happy home at Easter time. Thanks to all the PTA members who help raise funds for this raffle and to Hannah Burden for donating the Prize.
Ngā mihi nui,
Bringing in spare clothes
Please can parents of younger children please send in spare changes of clothing; undies, pants, tops etc. These can just stay in their bags in case they have an accident. We are having quite a few toileting issues and our supplies (undies and pants) are not being returned when we lend them out.
Lost Property will be out all next week
We have a lot of lost property that has accumulated over the last term. We will be putting out all of the lost property out every day next week. Please come and check for any clothing or lost items before next Friday. We will be donating anything not collected to the Salvation Army.
VIBE Assembly next Thursday
Pihipihingā will be hosting our next VIBE Assembly. Our bilingual classes (Room 1 and 2) welcome all whānau to the hall at 1.45 on Thursday 11th April to show the amazing mahi they have been doing. We will also be celebrating our action packed term and congratulating our tamariki who have been living out our school values. We hope to see you there for our last VIBE of the term!
Sport at West End
Rippa Rugby Competition Yr 5 -6
What a great representation we had at the Rippa Rugby competition yesterday. We had two teams enter and both showed enthusiasm, whakamana and kotahitanga on and off the field. What was also great to see was the teams continue to improve throughout the day and give it there all! We had plenty of points scored and came away thirsty for more competition.
TERM TWO SPORTS ARE NOW CLOSED.
Please return all Term 1 sports tops to Mrs Black.
Coaching at West End School
If you are an enthusiastic sportsman or woman wanting to coach a winter sports team we want you! We are after sports coaches who will become the main point of contact for teams, run a team practice once a week and attend games. On offer for doing such a role your child's sports fees for the season will be fully funded.
Girls in Futsal:
What a fantastic time we had last Thursday at the Girls in Futsal Tournament. The girls showed great whakamana and kotahitanga on court, and we even won the major prize! We look forward to these opportunities in the future.
Swimming Timetable
Swimming will continue into Term 2 due to our late start this term. Our last week of swimming will be in Week 3 next term.
Pihipihingā
In preparation for our VIBE Assembly next week, Pihipihingā have been practicing our poi performance. We have been working on our timing and skills. This has shown a lot of whakamana, but we look forward to showing you our final product next week!
Tipuranga
In Room 17 we have been showing manaakitanga by sharing and learning about each other.
We made our own Whanau pictures and placed them at the center of ourselves to show the important connection we have with our family.
Puāwaitanga
This term, Puawaitanga classes have been rotating around each class for new learning. A few weeks ago, Room 11 spent two afternoons with Whaea Gina in Room 6 creating these beautiful pictures. First we had to create our background sky and flowers. Secondly we traced our bees with great detail. Finally we stuck our bees on to the background.
Te Wao Nui o Tāne
Room 3 have been enjoying tennis lessons with Coach Jordan from Manawatu Tennis. We have been learning how to use front and back hands. We have learned to use the saying “open, close, nose” to help us form the correct movements. We also learned the ready position which we remember by pretending to lick an ice cream. Today we learned how to serve a ball. To serve in tennis, we make a ‘magic L’ while we stand sideways. We then say “ready, aim, high five” to serve the ball. We started with hand serves to practise and then we practised our serves using a racket. We love our sessions with Coach Jordan!
