Wondering how to start the process?
- Get Your FSA ID: the student and parent(s) should sign up for a StudentAid.gov account, more commonly known as an FSA ID, as soon as possible. It may take several days to be approved for an FSA ID, so this should done at least a few days before planning to tackle the FAFSA.

Scholarship Information
Applying for scholarships can certainly feel overwhelming; however, scholarships can help to lower the cost of tuition and reduce the amount of loans. See below for some additional information as you begin applying for scholarships (source: Siena College):
1. Start Your Search Early: Scholarships have deadlines that can come quickly, so it’s important to start your search early. Get yourself organized by making a list of any scholarships you may be eligible for and make note of the deadline!
2. Use Online Scholarship Search Tools: Scholarship sites offer searchable databases for filtering based on your interests, background, and academic achievements. Some to check out are ...
- Sallie Mae Scholarship: This tool offers access to over 6 million scholarships worth more than $30 billion. Plus, it’s free to use!
- Fastweb: Fastweb personalizes scholarship matches based on your profile, saving you hours of research.
- Niche: Helps you discover scholarships tailored to your interests and strengths with an easy-to-use platform.
3. Focus on What Makes You Unique: A lot of scholarships are directed specific groups, (ie: students interested in STEM, athletes, artists, or those with unique backgrounds). There are also scholarships for first-generation college students and those involved in community service. Think about what makes you stand out and use those traits to narrow your search.
4. Stay Organized: Applications often require materials, such as transcripts, recommendation letters, essays, and resumes. Create a dedicated area to keep all your materials in one place.
5. Don’t Ignore Small Scholarships: While a $500 scholarship may not seem like much, they add up quickly. Plus, smaller scholarships tend to have fewer applicants, increasing your chances of winning. Apply for as many as you can.
6. Watch Out for Scams: Unfortunately, not every scholarship is legitimate. Avoid any that require application fees or ask for sensitive personal information like your Social Security number upfront. Be sure to always read the fine print.
