AWAY FOR THE DAY UPDATE
On Friday, May 3rd, AHS students had the opportunity to participate in "Away For The Day" which was part of STUCO's awareness campaign where we were asking AHS students to think about how their phone use during school impacts focus, engagement, and social connections. Students who participated by leaving their phone at home, in their car, or turning it into the office were given a free sonic drink voucher (we ran out and have more on the way!). Students who made it the entire school day were put into a drawing for one $100 gift card, two, $50 gift cards, and fifteen $10 gift cards.
433 students participated
182 students turned their phone into the office for the day.
182 students responded to a short survey sent to them at the end of the school day.
Survey Information:
99.5% made it through the school day without their phone.
On a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being low and 5 being high...
83% of these students rated their stress level as being a 1 (46.7%) or 2 (36.3%).
73% of these students rated their focus level as being a 4 (49.5%) or 5 (22.5%).
68.7% rated their productivity level as being a 4 (40.1%) or 5 (28.6%)
87% of students rated their engagement with friends as being a 3 or higher.
94.5% of students indicated that they would do this again.
The following information was shared by STUCO with students throughout the week:
1. Research says that students who are regularly interrupted by text messages have 10.6% lower test scores. Just having a phone out on your desk has shown to cause a decline of focus during class.
- Let’s be real…turn off your notifications to all social media and messaging during school hours. Utilize your free time such as passing periods or lunch to check messages.
2. According to a study by Common Sense Media, 97% of 11-17 year old students use their phones during the school day with daily screen time ranging from less than a minute to 6.5 hours with a average time of 43 minutes. Think about that….43 mins is almost a class period on Wednesday’s and Friday’s.
3. Research done by Common Sense Media found that teens use their phones on a daily basis, with an average use time of over four hours. Students pick up their phones an average of 51 times per day! Just having a phone out on your desk has shown to cause a decline of focus in class.
- Let’s be real…during class, place your phone in your back pack or somewhere where it is not easily accessible. Might we suggest the phone jails…..???
4. 54% of teens agree that social media distracts them from paying attention to the people they are with.
- Let’s be real…disconnect so you can reconnect with friends and family. Try making a phone tower during a meal so you can actually have a conversation.
Thank you to all of our students and staff for participating in the event. We know that learning by experiencing can be an effective learning opportunity for our students.
- Mr. Riedy

NURSE'S NEWS
Parents, please remember that if your child has any medications in the health office at AHS, these must be picked up by a parent no later than 3pm on the 22 nd of May. Please make arrangements to pick these up on or before this day. If your child has medications to pick up, you will receive a letter in the mail to the address on file in powerschool. Any medication that is not picked up by this date will be disposed of, we do not keep medications in our offices over the summer. We do require that a parent pick up all medications for safety purposes. Also, Immunization letters will start coming out in the next couple of weeks.
