NEK League Updates
October Update:
October League Meeting was held on October 2nd at JCN.
1) Lots of discussion over the handling of the addition of three basketball games to the 25-26 high school season. A large amount of time was spent on the idea of creating a pre-season tournament to be held at the beginning of the season at BC in Atchison in order to handle the addition of the 3 new games. Nothing was decided will revisit the issue in November.
2) NEK is working on having their own Sportsmanship Code of Conduct, the TVL has one and it is approved by the boards of all the schools.
3) JH ADs are working through the Constitution and Handbook to update with the addition of the two new schools.
4) NEKL is going to make a proposal to the Executive Board to change the seeding for Softball and Baseball criteria. In regional tournaments, teams receiving a bye will consider the bye as a win as it relates to their win-loss record for seeding purposes in subsequent tournaments.
- Schools will be grouped into two groups of 34 (or equal number if there are not 68 schools participating). The bracket will be filled with the top 32 teams. The 33 and 34 seeds will not qualify for postseason play. The seeding manager will be responsible for seeding teams into four sub-states of four teams each for baseball and softball. Schools who will be seeded #1, #2, #3, and #4 in each regionals grouping must attend this meeting and pick up: tickets, plaques for winning team, baseballs, and softballs.
- All games will be played in tow days at the #1, #2, #3, and #4 seed in each half of the state if possible.
- Umpires are assigned by the school hosting the tournament games.
- The teams not involved in postseason play, seeds 33 and 34, may schedule a game to be played at the higher seed on May 14th or 15th.
Regional @ 1 seed: 1 vs 32, 8 vs 28, 12 vs 24, 16 vs 20
Regional @ 2 seed: 2 vs 31, 7 vs 27, 11 vs 23, 15 vs 19
Regional @ 3 seed: 3 vs 30, 6 vs 26, 10 vs 22, 14 vs 18
Regional @ 4 seed: 4 vs 29, 5 vs 25, 9 vs 21, 13 vs 17
November Meeting:
1) Lary Trowbridge our League Commissioner reported that 40% of the high schools in Kansas will be using the shot clock this basketball season. Stop watches are going to be required at the scoretables for those in the league that are using the shot clock and the announcer then has to do the countdown if or when one of the shot clock goes out. Lary stated that we need to be preparing for this - ordering now and getting them installed because when this rule change takes place there is going to be a delay in getting the systems and getting them installed.
2) The NEK is going to go in with the Big East and the TVL to present a proposal to KSHSAA to extend the basketball season by moving up the start date for games to allow for the addition of three new games to the 25-26 season. The proposal would also include moving the practice start date as well.
With the new post season format the season is being shortened, so leagues are finding difficult to add three games in a schedule that is already full. This could mean having to play games on Wednesday nights and/or Saturday nights.
3) Discussion continued with the three additional games for the 25-26 season and it was decided that each school would go out and find three additional games for the 25-26 season on their own, whether that means staying within the league or seeking out of league opponents. Once we hear the decision for proposal to extend the basketball season we will revisit the idea of how to handle the basketball season moving forward.
a) Play each team in league twice, like we are use to doing
b) Pre Season Tournament
c) Play each NEK team one and each school would then be responsible for filling the rest of their schedule with teams of their choice.
KSHSAA Updates and News
1) Addition of three basketball games for the 2025-2026 Season.
2) Last year they extended the number of games in a season to for baseball and softball from 20 to 26. This year KSHSAA has voted to extend the number of games a player can play in to 32. \
3) Classifications came out and Atchison County will remain one of the smallest schools in #A. League schools including, Riverside and Oskaloosa are also 3A this year.
4) Cross Country Regional assignments have come out and Atchison County will be competing at Sabetha on October 26, 2024.
5) Volleyball Postseason is changing for class 3A, 2A, and 1A. Teams are divided into regionals. Atchison County will be in Regional 1 along with the following schools:
- Hiawatha/ Royal Valley/ KC Bishop Ward/ Marysville/ Jeff West/ Olathe Heritage Christian/ Perry/ Riley County, Riverside, Sabetha, Santa Fe Trail, Nemaha Central, Silver Lake, St. Mary's, and Wellsville.
- See the attached document below explaining the post season for 321A Volleyball.
Upcoming Trips and Events
1) Dance Team will be participating in their 1st ever competition at Holton on November 16th. Cheer squad is going to watch with the hopes of learning what it takes to compete and then would like to perform there next year.
Facilities and Equipment Upgrades - Short Term
1) Thanks to donation from a local family and banner money from last year, we purchased an electronic down marker for the use at Varsity football games only.
2) With the use of foundation money, kids club wrestling money, private donations, match day funds, and banner money we were able to purchase 2 new wrestling mats. We are also going to put in a request to host Regional Wrestling again this year. Along with also hosting this year's first JH League Wrestling Tournament, HS Girls League Wrestling Tournament (1st year), and HS Boys League Wrestling (2nd year).
- Mat #1 was delivered on November 7th.
3) We are looking to use purple wave auction as a way of selling off two of the old mats to also help cover the cost of the new mats.
4) Booster club has made some great additions to our facilities, including fence cups that say Tiger Pride and new signage at the stadium for Pep Band, Tiger Fans, and Visitors to clearly mark the sections for seating.
5) Sadie Stone from Cornerstone Printing has created the new league banners for the gym. The new banners were hung in the gym on November 1st.
6) Heather Brown from HB Custom Printing is working on out new sponsor banners for football and baseball stadiums. We are upgrading all the banners to the mess banners so they will be able to hold up to the wind better than the vinyl ones we currently have. Several of the vinyl ones were damaged and destroyed during storms this spring.
7) Currently looking into purchasing another cash register for concessions to help with the long lines at the football concessions. This cash register could them be used inside during basketball season and used during the spring season out at the ball fields.
8) We are also looking into purchasing a new popcorn popper. The one at the football field needs replaced and the one used for basketball is also in bad shape. We are also looking at purchasing a pretzel warmer for FBLA to be able to serve pretzels at basketball games. Both of these machines can be used by multiple groups throughout the year.
9) Booster Club is looking into ways to upgrade the look of our football scoreboard. Along the bottom of the scoreboard the Atchison County is very faded and the Booster Club is working on some ideas that they could do to improve the look.
10) KSHSAA has approved the use of shot clocks for high school basketball. This is on a volunteer basis this year. However most ADs in the state anticipate this is going to be a rule within the next 2 years. This means we need to look into upgrading our scoreboards to be prepared for the shot clock rule, potentially by next basketball season. This year alone 40% of the high schools in Kansas are going to be using the shot clock this year.
Facilities and Equipment Upgrades - Long Term
1) Football Stadium Bleachers - at two home football games (this year and last year) we had people fall through the bleachers and had to fix with temporary boards while the games were going on. The bleachers need to be replaced.
2) Track - Our track has been unusable for hosting track meets several years now and is only getting worse. With the track being used by community members, elementary students as well as JSH students for PE and other activities, and the track teams, there needs to be some concern about injuries taking place on the cracked and peeling track.
3) Baseball/Softball Upgrades:
- Curtain or drop down batting cages to go in the new addition multipurpose room
- Fix or purchase new netting for the outdoor batting cage
- Orange and Black Padding with Tiger Logo along the backstops of softball & baseball fields
- New sets of bases are needed for both fields
