Chester Ronning School
January 2025
Principal's Message
Greetings CRS Community,
I know that we have been back to classes for a couple of weeks now but it's still my first opportunity to wish our School Community a Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoyed a nice break from school over the holidays and that 2025 will be filled with positivity and opportunities.
The New Year has kicked off with an incredible amount of learning and staff and students are all working hard. We are currently in the middle of Alberta Education's mid-year assessment window. During this time, students in Kindergarten and Grades 1-3 will be assessed in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Gr. 4 and 5 students who needed more time to reach the benchmark after the fall assessment window will be reassessed in numeracy at this time as well. Data from these assessments will inform our teachers' programming in the months ahead. In February, there will be another literacy assessment window for Battle River School Division's DIBELS assessment, which will provide additional information to help us reach students where they are at in their language skills and accelerate their progress.
At this time of year, I always like to remind families about our school division's cold weather policies and, after the recent squall that created extreme whiteout conditions and dangerous road travel, it seems especially timely! BRSD buses and the Handivan will be cancelled when temperatures, including windchill, fall below -40℃. Regardless of the temperature, our school will always be open with teachers here to welcome students. Whenever it is colder than -20℃, again including windchill, it will be an indoor recess although we have several students permitted to participate in the new Polar Bear Club who will continue to go outside as long as temperatures stay above -27℃. Whether your child is in the Polar Bear Club or not, please ensure that they have proper winter clothing and boots every day and please talk to them about zipping up their coats and wearing head and hand coverings, even for what might seem like a short walk between the car and the school. We want everyone to be safe and comfortable no matter how long they expect to be outside.
Stay safe and warm!

Grade 4/5 Piano Club
What is piano club? It is a time Thursdays during lunch recess for any Gr.4/5's who enjoy piano. Students can share pieces and listen to others play, and anyone who wants to learn about piano is welcome. Students can talk to Mme Lunty if they have any questions.
Music Notes:
This semester in music, Grade 4 and 5’s have been exploring a wide variety of activities related to pitch, tempo, musical instrument families, basic note naming and more. Having this information under our belts, during the second semester, we will explore and play on our recorders. Recorders were on the school supply list from the beginning of the year, so most students have them at school ready to go. If you don’t happen to have a recorder yet, you can find beginner recorders available for purchase in most music stores or online (They can be found locally at the music store Long & McQuade in Camrose). If you have any questions about recorders or finding a recorder, please let me know!
