Head Cheetah Message
Families,
This Wednesday will be our 100th day of school! Our classrooms will be filled with 100th day snacks, clothing, and special projects. The 100th day also provides a perfect opportunity to practice base-ten math activities, so our building will be full of mathematics on Wednesday!
Sunday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day, and I am hoping that Phil, (or whichever groundhog you’re loyal to), doesn’t see his shadow! That would mean an early spring is on its way; and given the amount of illness in our building, an early spring sounds great! Please continue to encourage regular handwashing and good hygiene habits with your learners at home. We’re sending everyone positive thoughts for a warm, healthy weekend!!
Best,
Joey & Andrea

Kindergarten Hibernation Day
Today, Kindergarten students participated in Hibernation Day. As a cumulating event for their science unit about animals that hibernate in the winter students worked in classroom caves, dressed cozy like a bear, and worked on hibernation related activities.

Literacy News
Wednesday February 5th is World Read Aloud Day! This celebration started in 2010 and is celebrated every year on the first Wednesday in February. On this day, we celebrate the power of reading aloud and the importance of global literacy.
“The read aloud process has enormous benefits to literacy learning. Read aloud is an instructional practice where teachers, parents, and caregivers read texts aloud to children. The reader incorporates variations in pitch, tone, pace, volume, pauses, eye contact, questions, and comments to produce a fluent and enjoyable delivery. Reading texts aloud is the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for successful reading” (McCormick, 1977).
At Memorial School we will be celebrating this special day in a variety of ways, including visiting our cozy winter lodge set up in the lobby to listen to a read aloud as well creating a schoolwide quilt of our favorite books.
We encourage reading aloud at home as well in order for your child to maximize the benefits of this practice. Read alouds expose students to strong vocabulary while strengthening listening, comprehension and fluency skills. The bonding time that read alouds foster is an added bonus! So grab your favorite book and start reading!

Library Media
Hi Cheetah families!
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
Save the date: Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be coming Friday February 28-Thursday March 6
PreK students will be enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, kindness, and friendship.
Kindergarten has wrapped up our unit on the Caldecott Award and will be moving into reading books with the theme “caring”. We will also be introducing call numbers and library organization and practicing our ABC order to help develop library navigation skills.
First grade has moved into their coding unit. They are being introduced to the basic fundamentals in a program called Code Monkey. 1st graders have done a great job so far!
Second grade will be working on creating Valentines for seniors to donate to East Hampton Senior Center, after reading the book, Somebody Loves you Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli. Later in the month we will focus on using our online catalog and reviewing library skills.
Third graders found coding to be the star of the Library throughout the month of January. Kids used Code Monkey to explore block-based and text-based coding by solving a series of fun puzzles. Coding is not only a useful skill in and of itself, it’s a great way to build logical thinking skills! Kids who code learn to break down complex problems into simpler steps. This is a skill that will be helpful in many settings! While our first coding unit is drawing to a close, I encourage kids to continue to access and explore their Code Monkey accounts in order to build their skills.- Ms. Sawyer

Notes From The Nurse
Please let your building nurse know if your child is diagnosed with any illness (such as strep, flu, pneumonia, covid, mono, pink eye, etc.) as the nurse’s office tracks illnesses. Please be specific when you notify school with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.
Here are some guidelines that are helpful for families.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Mild headache and/or stomachache
Fatigue
Keep your child home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
Vomiting (Wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether to bring them to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in school. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s note if they are seen. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.
Health Concerns
If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about you can e-mail the school nurse at their email below.
If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc.) please send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines, and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.
Respectfully,
The EHPS Nurses

Safe School Climate
The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
