Inclement Weather Days

Mental Health Matters
Mental Health is a Muscle Webinar-Nov. 19
The next webisode in the Park Hill Family Webinar Series is entitled Mental Wellness is a Muscle. The webisode will be held on Tuesday, November 19, 6:00-7:00 PM. You can register for the webinar by clicking here.
We all have mental health, like we all have physical health – and just like there are things we can do to improve our physical health, there are things we can do to improve our mental health. When we think of mental wellness as a “muscle” we can “workout,” we open the door to a world of possibilities for becoming a healthier and happier you! Participants will learn about the importance of mental health and mental wellness, and the valuable tools we can use to exercise for positive mental well-being.
The presenter is Taylor Cline, the Youth Suicide Prevention Specialist at Beacon Mental Health Services (formerly Tri-County). Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master in Social Work from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she concentrated on youth mental health and gained valuable experience from working with local child welfare agencies and schools. As a Youth Suicide Prevention Specialist, Taylor works with schools and other community partners to provide educational mental health and suicide prevention programs to local youth and their families.
You can view past and upcoming webisodes in the Family Webinar Series by visiting the Student and Family Support page, scrolling down to Mental Health and Healthy Living Resources, and expanding the Family Webinar Series section.

Bullying Prevention
This month Ms. Halpin will be in your child's classroom to discuss bullying. What is bullying? Bullying is hurtful and repeated, but it also is unwanted physical or emotional pain, involves an imbalance of power, and can happen online. To help students achieve their best and make schools safe and welcoming, we need more than just anti-bullying policies. In our curriculum, students will experience a blend of anti-bullying methods with other important skills like empathy, communication, and resilience. This helps schools deal with bullying better while also teaching students to understand and care for each other. This approach makes it easier for schools to embrace bullying prevention strategies and build an environment of kindness and respect. Here are some conversation starters to continue the conversation at home: What are some ways you can include others and make sure everyone feels welcome? How can you report bullying?

Family Groups
This year Hopewell began something new called Family Groups! Each month on our assembly day students attend their family group in the morning. The family group is led by a Hopewell staff member and consists of around 14 students varying across all grade levels. Students with siblings are in the same family group. The idea of groups is to build new relationships throughout the building, a bigger sense of community and give students an opportunity to engage with other grade levels. In family groups, a name a flag was created, get to know your activities have been occurring and there is a focus on our trait of the month. Ask your student who their family group leader is, what they named themselves, and some of the responsibility and gratitude activities we have done so far!

Attendance, Absence, Lateness
Every child is urged to form excellent habits regarding attendance and promptness. A good start to the day helps foster a positive attitude. If your child is absent, please call the school office (816)359-4410 before 9:10am. If you fail to report the absence or lateness, our attendance messenger will call out at 10:00am to notify you that your child is not in school. This is a practice we’ve instituted to ensure the safe arrival of our children.
Absences or lateness may also be reported through your infinite campus parent portal.
Student Dismissal Plans, Transportation Day-to-Day Changes
If your student is going to have different transportation, a phone call or email from the parent/guardian must accompany the request. Please contact the office prior to 3:00pm to request a change in transportation. Changes to ride an alternative bus will only be issued for a change in daycare or for the safety of the student. If an alternative person is checking out your student, the person must have their ID scanned.
Students being picked up prior to the end of the school day, please arrive in the office prior to 3:30pm. Parent/Guardians who arrive after 3:50pm, will need to join the car rider line or wait until dismissal begins for their child to be called out of class.
If your child is a bus rider, it is imperative that we plan for any transportation changes prior to dismissal. Buses leave once they are loaded.
Transportation App
First View Bus App for Families
All students scan their badges as they board the bus, giving you access to live updates as to the location of your child's bus and the anticipated time in which the bus will arrive at your stop. This is especially helpful when buses become delayed while in route for various reasons. Check out the information below to get set up!
If you have questions or experience difficulty in setting this up, please contact the Hopewell Office.

PTA Clothing Center
The Park Hill School District PTA runs a clothing center that provides free, gently used clothing, plus new socks and underwear to district students. Please visit our Facebook page or the PTA Clothing Center website for updated information.
The PTA Clothing Center serves all Park Hill School District students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The PTA asks you to bring proof that you are currently enrolled in the Park Hill district. This could be a student ID, dated letter from a principal or social worker, class schedule, or enrollment form. You can also show us the district portal with student information in it.
Donations are welcome at the Clothing Center anytime, year-round. There is a blue bin in front of the garage of the clothing center, which is at 8009 N Atkins, just south of the Gerner Family Early Education Center. Please make sure your donations are clean, in good condition and bagged in kitchen-sized bags that the volunteers can lift.
PBIS
Soaring to Success
We believe it is our job to teach our children expectations just like we would teach the curriculum. Through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), we have developed a framework that sets clear and consistent language throughout the building.
Each week, a Hawk from each class is recognized for being an outstanding Hawk and Soaring to Success! They receive a certificate and get their picture on a bulletin board in our main hall.

Birthday Favors
Approved Birthday Favors:
Students may bring a birthday treat or favor to school to share with their classmates, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the eight (8) major allergens - milk, wheat, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish.
Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.
