A Week of Competition, Collaboration, and Concentration
You heard it right earlier in the week from Principal Friedenberg. We are barely in 2nd place for the SDUSD attendance improvement competition. See the video from Manny Machado below. You answered the call and our weekly attendance average was up! Thank you, Falcons. We have seven days to go to finish strong and win a school-wide trip to a Padres game! Let's goooooooo!
On Monday, our Falcons danced, directed, drew, and drummed during everyone's favorite day, VAPA MONDAY. This allowed our teaching team valuable time to collaborate. Our 4th and 5th grade teachers, Mr. Léon and Mrs. Grosse observed our 1st and 2nd grade teachers, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Wilsie, provide phonics and reading comprehension instruction. A handful of our upper grade students came to Fletcher reading significantly below grade level. Building capacity to provide this level of intervention in class is going to boost students' abilities to accelerate their reading growth. The Kindergarten-3rd grade team dove deeper into the practice of next year's math curriculum, Illustrative Math (IM). This new program builds students' mathematical conceptual understanding to support their abilities to think critically and communicate effectively. The shift from computational math to conceptual math will prepare students for the complex challenges of the world they will inherit upon graduating high school.
Our 3rd-5th graders began their California spring assessments this week by completing the two math subsets. The first test is called the Performance Task. Students are required to read and solve a problem using multiple math skills. The second test is called the Computer Adaptive Test which starts with a grade-level difficulty question and then provides harder or easier questions based on whether the students answer correctly or incorrectly. Next week is dedicated to providing time for students to make-up or complete any missed assessments and to have a break before tackling the English Language Arts assessments.
🏀 Co-Ed Basketball Tournament 🏀
Congratulations to Bella, Julian, Koi, and Juan who emerged victorious in our co-ed basketball tournament today. Four teams of 3rd-5th graders squared off today in 3v3 basketball. They've been practicing passing, shooting, dribbling, and teamwork for the past month. Next week we start co-ed soccer at lunch for 1st-5th grade. In order to participate, students must display excellent citizenship, regular attendance, and strong academic effort. Stay tuned for more info!
