Dear KDM Community,
This week was a giant celebration of reading for KDM students! Each day, students enjoyed sharing their guesses as to who the masked readers were from the night prior. We had a fantastic visit from Anica Mrose Rissi, who shared the many books she had written. The Sussex County Miners Reading Club kicked off our reading initiative with a fun and interactive assembly, and Thursday evening we had another great KDM PTA Family Reading Night event!
Our TREP$ Event Marketplace on Friday night was a HUGE success. We appreciate everyone who stopped by to meet our kid-preneurs. We extend a special thank you to the Rockaway Township Education Foundation for supporting the TREP$ program and Ms. Michele Pratola, RTEF President and Robert Livorsi, Vice President, for facilitating our Ribbon Cutting ceremony along with Superintendent, Dr. Richard Corbett. Kudos to Liz Clark, TREP$ advisor, who did an outstanding job of steering these students through their journey of entrepreneurship. It was a great night!
Please be mindful that Trimester 2 ends next Tuesday. If you have any concerns about your student's academic progress, please reach out to their teachers.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend!
Warm Regards,
Brian Rawlins
Principal

Building Our Community
During "Read Across America Week" students and staff celebrated with "Wacky Wednesday", "Fox in Socks", and "Cat in the Hat" spirit days.
"This week, our kindergarten classrooms had a wonderful time celebrating Read Across America! We enjoyed wearing our Dr. Seuss hats and diving into fun, engaging learning activities inspired by his beloved books. From rhyming games to creative crafts, our students had a blast exploring the joy of reading in a playful and interactive way. It was a fantastic celebration of literacy and imagination!" --The Kindergarten Team
Magnetism is Magical!
Fourth grade science has been buzzing with excitement during our hands-on unit on magnetism! Students explored how magnetic forces travel through solids, liquids, and gases by making airplanes fly, racing through self-made tracks, and even levitating objects. In collaborative groups, they conducted experiments to measure how many washers it takes to break a magnetic force and observed the invisible yet powerful magnetic fields surrounding magnets. As we wrap up this engaging unit, we’re gearing up for one that promises to be truly electrifying!
We had a great time with author, Anica Mrose Rissi. We are grateful for the donated signed books she gifted to KDM!

Sussex County Miners Reading Club
The Sussex County Miners Reading Club visited KDM to share introduce their reading initiative that rewards regular reading habits!
The Sussex County Miners Professional Baseball Team is thrilled to partner with over forty schools in the region to promote the importance of good reading habits. The Sussex County Miners Reading Club supports professional educators by providing students and their families with a structure to develop and maintain regular reading habits and a fun reward for all who complete the three-week reading incentive. Strong, routine reading habits help children build vocabulary and strengthen comprehension, increase empathy, and develop better writing skills.
Each child who reads an average of 100 minutes per week for three weeks (that is twenty minutes per day outside of school, at least five days per week) will receive two tickets to enjoy a Miners game at Skylands Stadium in Augusta. There will be a special weeknight game in the summer designated to celebrate each school! It will be a fun summer reunion game for students, faculty, and staff! Video highlights of the school year will be featured on the Skylands Stadium video board. Lucky students, faculty, and staff will participate in the Miners’ between-inning games and contests. Also, a student and staff representative from each school will get to throw out the ceremonial first pitch!
To receive your child’s free tickets by email, a parent/guardian must complete the form at the end of this message. If your child participated last year, you will recall paper reading logs. Those logs are no longer required. Each parent who registers will receive a separate digital form at the end of the incentive period to attest that your child met the reading requirements.
The Sussex County Miners are one of eighteen teams to play in the Frontier League, the oldest continually running independent league in the United States and a Major League Baseball Partner League. The Miners play a 96-game schedule from May through August, and their 48 scheduled home games are at Skylands Stadium in Augusta.
If parents/guardians have questions about this program, please email the Miners’ Coordinator of Community Engagement, Scott Davies, at Scott@scminers.com.
