Silver Gate Elementary
August 26, 2024
Hello Silver Gate Families!
I hope you all had a great weekend! As we dive into week three of the school year (can you believe how quickly time is flying?), here are some updates.
Running club has kicked off, and we're in the process of getting all our volunteers organized. We also had a wonderful welcome picnic—thank you to all the students and parents who could attend!
I want to commend everyone for the fantastic job they're doing in learning the routines and settling into their classrooms. I'm proud of the students' hard work, positive attitudes, and the continued support from our incredible community. It truly takes a team effort to make our school thrive, and the staff at Silver Gate deeply appreciates your dedication and involvement. Thank you for all that you do!
Fire Drill
On August 27, we will be having a Fire Drill. We hold drills to practice responding to the bell signal, where to go in an emergency, and what would happen should we have an actual fire. We schedule fire drills at all different times and days of the week so that we have practice reacting in different situations, e.g. lunch area.
We also practice lockdown drills and earthquake/disaster drills through the year. We will alert you when we do the drills via Konstella so that you understand that it was a drill and not an actual event. It will also give you an opportunity to talk about home safety procedures.
Thank you for your support.
Leader in Me
Leader in Me is a wonderful social emotional learning curriculum we have at Silver Gate. The first 8 Days is a series of lesson plans teachers will implement throughout the month of August. It is designed to use one day for each of the 7 Habits and another for the 8th habit. Lessons centered on the day’s habit are woven into foundational activities such as getting to know students, writing a classroom mission statement, and establishing classroom routines. Enjoy the below links that have home connections to the lessons learned in school.
SSC/SGT Nomination Form
Your voice is needed! Silver Gate Elementary is looking for three parent representatives who are willing to support the shared decision making process to improve student achievement through quality teaching and learning experiences.
Parents may choose to volunteer to serve on the School Site Council and Site Governance Team or other parents may nominate them. Please fill out the Google Form to submit your nomination by Friday, August 30th.
Gator Garden Volunteers
To our Gator Garden Volunteers, we have been busy preparing the gardens and lesson plans for you and the students. We will be having separate orientations this year for the two different gardens. We will have Orientation for volunteers teaching Grades 1-4 on Tuesday September 3, 2024, at 7:45, in the lower/main garden. We will have Orientation for volunteers teaching TK and Kindergarten on Thursday September 5, 2024, at 7:45 in the TK/K Garden, up by Mrs. Benjamin's classroom. We strongly encourage everyone, even if you have taught before, to attend the orientation(s). We have a few new things going on in the gardens this year. Lessons will start the week of September 9-13, 2024. Please make sure that you have all of your volunteer paperwork into the office, including your TB test results, prior to September 9th. If you have any questions about your volunteer paperwork, please contact the office directly. Thank you and we cannot wait to start gardening!

Art To Remember
STEAM launches this week with our annual "Art to Remember" fundraiser! This program helps parents and schools preserve children's artwork while raising funds for enrichment education through custom-printed keepsakes. Our STEAM teacher, Miss Danielle, will guide each class in a directed drawing activity in our on-campus art studio. In mid-October, you'll receive a catalog featuring various items adorned with your child's custom artwork, available for purchase—just in time for the holidays!
Silver Gate Volunteer Information
If you would like to volunteer for anything here at SIlver Gate we do need to have a 24/25 volunteer appllication turned in along with a TB test. The TB test is good for 4 years. If you need to get a TB test you may come into the office on Monday's from 7:30am-2:30pm to see our nurse Amy Elkind and have her do the TB questionaire form with you and sign off on it or you may have any other doctor or nurse sign off on it or go get the TB test done at an urgent care or your doctors office. If you have any questions please contact Renee Erickson @ rerickson@sandi.net or Tracy Rebelo @ trebelo@sandi.net.
Reminder Parents - All devices to remain in students' backpacks during the school day
We are facing a lot of device, cell phone, and smart watch issues during school hours. It is our school's policy to not have any devices in the classroom and they should be kept inside the students' backpack until the end of the school day.
- All electronic equipment (Cell Phones, Smart Watches, I Pod’s, games, etc.) is to remain in the student’s backpack until after the school day ends. Our previous policy stated these items were not permitted on campus however, we recognize the reality that students may need to communicate with their families after school. If any device is found outside of the backpack, the student gets one warning to put it away. Should it happen a second time, the device will be confiscated and the parent will need to pick it up in the office at the end of the day. The school does not take responsibility for loss or theft of these items.
Food and Nutrition Services
Dear San Diego Unified Families,
Welcome back to the 2024-25 school year! Under California’s Universal Meals Program, all students will continue to eat for free. We encourage your child to enjoy breakfast & lunch at school, where our nutrition staff serves fresh, nutritious, and delicious meals. Students can look forward to the return of some of their favorite entrées, as well as the addition of new menu options this fall.
Breakfast highlights include fresh yogurt parfaits and a sunrise burrito, as well as new items like whole grain cinnamon rolls, cinnamon coffee cake, and bagels with cream cheese. At lunch, students can try vegetarian options like the Mexican layered bean bowl & mozzarella breadsticks, as well as new lunch offerings like the Baja hummus plate, turkey and cheese wraps, spaghetti and meatballs, grilled cheese sandwiches, carnitas burritos, and chicken caesar salad wraps. School meals are whole-grain rich, low in sodium, and contain no trans fats, artificial colors, or artificial sweeteners. Fresh salad bars are available daily, featuring locally sourced fruits and vegetables.

ATTENDANCE & SICKNESS PROTOCOL
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.
When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2200 ext. 1 by 9:00 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email Renee Erickson at rerickson@sandi.net
Any child arriving after 7:50 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. This is disruptive to your child and the entire class. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time. Silver Gate had the highest attendance in the Point Loma Cluster last year! Let’s keep up the good work!
