Brighton Lake Rd. Lane Closure
Please see the message from the City of Brighton's Department of Public Works, in case your commute is impacted by the outlined road work.
The City’s Department of Public Works will be performing an asphalt repair in front of 1312 Brighton Lake Road on Monday, October 14, 2024. This will require Brighton Lake Road to be closed to through traffic between S. Third Street and Northern Ridge Drive. The closure will begin at approximately 8 am on Monday and remain closed until mid-morning on Tuesday, October 15 to allow the asphalt to completely cure.
Residents who live to the east of the work area will have access to and from their homes at the Fairway Trails closure, and those who live to the west of the work area, will need to access their homes via the closure at Northern Ridge Drive.
Drivers in the area should follow the posted detour. North/eastbound Brighton Lake Road traffic will
detour down Northern Ridge, to Peppergrove, to Fairway Trails to S. Third and then to Brighton Lake
Road. South/westbound traffic will detour down S. Third Street, to Fairway Trails, to Peppergrove, to
Northern Ridge to Brighton Lake Road. Please see the attached map.
1st Quarter Progress Report Grades
1st Quarter Progress Report grades are now visible in your ParentConnect accounts. Please keep in mind these grades are just a snapshot at that particular point in time, but are a good conversation starter with your student(s) if their grades are not in a position that reflects their traditional academic performance. Administrators and counselors will be meeting with students in the coming weeks to discuss concerns with grades and/or attendance in hopes that we can get students to a successful position by the end of the 1st Quarter on November 1st.
It is important for your student(s) to get in the habit of regularly checking their StudentConnect account (and email account) and tracking their own progress to keep tabs on what is due and when, as well as any fluctuations in their grades so that they know where they stand at any given point in time. Please feel free to join us in encouraging them to do so.
2024/25 Tutor List
Each year, the BHS Counseling Office releases a list of potential tutors if your student is struggling in a particular class and in need of additional support. We always encourage students to start with their classroom teacher (they are at the very least available from 2:20 - 2:50 each day for support), but if they find themselves needing more assistance, the 2024/25 Tutor List can be found here.
If your student would like to work with a peer tutor, we have the ability to help facilitate that as well. Our BHS National Honor Society will have peer tutoring starting shortly. More information will be provided to parents and students once it becomes available.
Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-Up
Brighton High School Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up quick. Conferences will be taking place this year on Thursday, October 17th (in-person) and Tuesday, October 22nd (virtual). They will take place from 3:30 - 6:30 pm each day, and you need to sign up in advance.
- You may notice one of your student’s teachers has an alternative schedule for conferences due to extenuating circumstances. Please contact them directly via email with any questions or clarifications.
Our school is using PTCFast.com to make signups as convenient as possible this year. Please enter the following web address into your browser window: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Brighton_High_School_1
Simply check the boxes for the teachers you would like to set up conferences with and you will receive an email with the times they are available for conferences. If you select a virtual conference, the teacher will send you an email directly with the link to the virtual conference session on the 22nd.
Student ID Cards - Reminder
As you know, student and staff safety is our priority at BHS. One of the things that helps with this is knowing who is coming and going in our building at any point in time. Students should be carrying their Student ID Card on them at all times. When coming into the building after school has started, students will be required to buzz into the building and show their Student ID Card in order to gain entry.
*If your student loses their Student ID Card, we can print them a replacement. There is a $10 fee for replacing a lost Student ID Card and you may also be required to purchase a new athletic pass as well.
Picture Retake Day - 10/15
Picture Retake Day will be on Tuesday, October 15th. Student retakes are completed alphabetically, so if your student missed Registration, or simply would like their picture retaken, they need to listen to the announcements being made over the PA system on Tuesday that will let them know when they should head down to have their picture retaken.
*Even if you are not planning on ordering pictures, if your student did not attend Registration, they MUST get their picture taken on Tuesday so that they can get their Student ID Card.
Upcoming Senior Meeting
We will have the first of our Class of 2025 Senior meetings on Wednesday, October 23rd during 1st and 2nd Hour. At this meeting, the Senior Class Council and BHS Staff will be talking about upcoming Senior events, deadlines for Seniors, cap and gown ordering, the Senior Class Composite picture, and more! We are encouraging all Seniors to attend the meeting on this day so they can be provided with this important information. If a student ends up being absent for any reason, we will provide the slideshow after the presentation.
*Immediately following the meeting, the Class of 2025 will have their Senior Class Composite picture taken in the BHS Fieldhouse. Students should plan to wear their Senior Class Shirt on this day.
Yellow Ribbon Assembly
The theme for this year's Yellow Ribbon Assembly will be - “FIND your ANCHOR”
Our Yellow Ribbon Program is a very serious and important part of what we do at Brighton High School. BHS has been doing a Yellow Ribbon Program since 2000. It is designed to educate and raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Yellow Ribbon also focuses on the message that BHS cares about all of our students, and that it is okay to ask for help for either yourself or a friend. It is also a time to make students aware of all the support services we provide. Yellow Ribbon is designed and implemented by the Peer for Peers and Student Support Services.
Wednesday, October 23rd, is designated as Yellow Ribbon Day at BHS.
We will have Yellow Ribbon activities and information throughout the week. There will be announcements, information, messages, lunch tables with giveaways, and video announcements. The Carl Nagy Foundation will also be joining us during lunch, providing information, support, and giveaways for our students. The day and week includes signing a pledge and understanding what it means to support the message of Yellow Ribbon. This includes asking for help, recognizing the signs of suicide risk, being available for a friend, letting others know if you are concerned for the health or safety of another student or yourself, recognizing how you talk to others both in person and online, and other messages that support caring about each other.
The State of Michigan has a “Chase Edwards Law”, Section 380.1171 which encourages schools to provide mental health awareness and suicide prevention to students and staff.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. You can contact Kris Nelson, School Social Worker and Yellow Ribbon Coordinator at nelsonk@brightonk12.com or 810-229-4152.
Livingston County Job Shadow Day
Liv Co Job Shadow Day is once again being offered this year to our students. BHS, in partnership with Livingston ESA’s Career Development Department, has planned a countywide, bi-annual event, Liv Co Job Shadow Day, on Wednesday, November 13 - Friday, November 15, 2024. This is a one-day activity designed to show Juniors and Seniors a bit about what a day in the life of different careers is like. There are many diverse opportunities for students to shadow, ranging from aircraft mechanics to veterinarians to HVAC technicians.
Sign-up for students opens on October 23rd at 7pm; students can register and sign up on the same day! Registration involves a parent signature to confirm students' permission to participate. Students can preview the website ahead of time to see what Job Shadow Opportunities are available at the Livingston Career Hub. Please note that career availability is on a first-come, first-served basis, so it would be a good idea to have a list of top five choices. Some careers require extra paperwork, so please check that out ahead of time. Extra forms are attached to the Job Shadow Profile. All extra forms are due to the employer via email by November 6th, or the job shadow will be canceled.
Please see your counselors or CTE teachers for more information. It’s a great way to check out different careers to see if it’s the one for you!
More information on this opportunity can also be found here.
AP Test Payments - Now Open
AP Exam payments are now being accepted on ParentConnect. If a student intends to take an AP exam in May at BHS, they need to submit payment for each AP exam they intend to take through ParentConnect. Each exam is $100, and payments are being accepted until October 30th. If payment is not received before that date, an exam will not be ordered for your student. If you have any questions regarding the payment process, please reach out to Jennifer Napuli at napulij@brightonk12.com or Sheryl Hemphill at hemphills@brightonk12.com.
2024/25 Advisory - Reminders on Traveling and Testing
*There will be Advisory this week even with the shortened week!
Going forward, in addition to staying in their Advisory class, students are given additional opportunities to utilize their Advisory period in a way that sets them up for success. The opportunities include:
1) Traveling to one of their teacher's classes to receive additional academic support
2) Making up a missing test/quiz with one of their teachers or in the Media Center
We encourage students to take advantage of both of these opportunities. If they are planning to do so, there are a couple of important reminders as it relates to both traveling and Media Center Testing for them to remember:
- If a student is traveling, they MUST get a pass from the teacher they are planning to see by the end of the day on Tuesday.
- Teachers may utilize the Media Center during Advisory as an alternative testing site for students, but do not have to (they can have them test with them instead).
- ALL quizzes and/or tests must be sent to the Media Center by the classroom teacher by Tuesday at 2:50 pm. No quizzes/tests will be accepted on the day of Advisory. This means students need to communicate with their teachers and make sure any tests/quizzes they plan to make up are sent down in advance.
- If a student is planning to travel or take a make-up test/quiz, they should email BOTH their Advisory teacher and the teacher they travel to on Advisory Wednesday upon showing up to the appropriate location.

BHS PTO is an active part of your student’s overall high school experience. In addition to others, the BHS PTO proudly supports the following activities throughout the school year: educational student assemblies, Academic Letter, Academic Wall of Fame, Freshman class activities, staff and student appreciation events, financial support for student-run after-school clubs and organizations, and the Senior Picnic. All activities are supported through the generosity of BHS families. If you would like to donate to the BHS PTO, you can do so here.
Our PTO at BHS has already been hard at work this year supporting BHS staff and students in a variety of ways, including a student lunch treat on Thursday of this past week! Coming up, PTO will be supporting our teachers by providing them with a meal before Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 17th. Please see the message from PTO regarding this below:
The PTO will be hosting a dinner for BHS staff during conferences on October 17, 2024. If you would like to help, please review the available slots and click on the button to sign up. Please indicate in your sign-up what type of soup and/or salad you will be bringing so we can avoid duplicates. A few vegetarian and gluten-free options would be wonderful!
Please drop all perishable items to the HS Main Office before 1:00pm on the day of event. Please drop all non-perishable items at the HS Main Office anytime prior to the event date. Thank you!

Updated Senior Portrait Due Date
Apologies from the BHS Yearbook Staff! The deadline for Senior Portrait submissions is November 8, NOT October 31, as posted earlier. Don't wait to order your yearbook, however, as the current deal ends on September 30! If you'd like to surprise your special Senior at the end of the year, consider purchasing a Recognition Ad. Visit https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school to check all three off your list!
Portraits by Alex Senior Headshot Information - Due Date Clarification Included
The "to-do" list for a Senior (and Senior parent) is a long one. There are three important tasks to ensure each Senior is honored in the 2024-25 BHS Yearbook. Seniors must submit their Senior Headshots to the yearbook by November 8th, along with a list of Senior Activities. Parents may also buy an "ad" to recognize their special Senior. If you do not have a photographer submitting pictures on your behalf, students will have the opportunity to have Portraits by Alex take their Senior picture on either 11/13 or 11/14 for $50. Senior Yearbook Recognition Ad prices go up by 12/2. Of course, Seniors will also want to order a yearbook as a treasured memento of their Senior year. Take care of all three tasks at once at https://www.yearbooknerds.com/brighton-high-school! Order your book by September 30th to get the best price!
Brighton High School Yearbook Flyer
We have gotten a number of questions regarding the 11/13 and 11/14 dates for Seniors planning to get their Senior Headshot taken by Portraits by Alex at BHS. To clarify, these dates ARE correct. They come later once we have had a chance to go through all submissions and determine who has not submitted a Senior Headshot yet in case they still want to do so. It gives us the opportunity to reach out to students and parents and Portraits by Alex submits the images directly to the yearbook company all at once in bulk.
If you are wondering how to sign up to have your student's Senior Headshot taken on the 13th or 14th by Portraits by Alex, there will be a Google sign-up that is sent to students at the end of October. Students need to sign-up through their school Google account. If you are interested, please look out for that email in October.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Scholarship Opportunities
We are regularly looking for potential scholarship for our students to help offset the cost of any type of postsecondary education our students pursue. One of these options is the scholarship directory. Within this directory, you can find scholarships available for a variety of different categories. Scholarships specific to this year's Seniors can be found here. You will find scholarship information for a multitude of scholarships dated as far out as August 31, 2025. You may also be interested in some of the Michigan-specific scholarships listed as a separate category. This page is one of many resources available for students when it comes to potential scholarship opportunities so we would encourage you to check it out! Our counseling website also includes pages for both local/state and national scholarships that your student may apply for.
Michigan College Month - October 2024
According to the Michigan College Access Network:
Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college. Michigan College Month can open the door for students by encouraging them to take the most significant steps toward college in their senior year. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college and helps break down some of the most complex and commonly cited barriers to attending college.
Brighton High School will have a variety of different events in October in support of Michigan College Month. During the month of October, a number of Michigan colleges and universities are waiving application fees for prospective applicants. More information on specific school doing so can be found here.
Michigan Assured Admission Pact - Important Info on Guaranteed College Admission

The crisis of fentanyl and counterfeit pills is claiming far too many young lives, and we are committed to making a difference. Fentanyl Fathers Story
They provide assemblies all across the country to schools and their team of passionate bereaved parents travel across the country to directly educate students about the dangers of fentanyl, counterfeit pills, and the critical steps for recognizing and responding to an overdose.
