NHS Student Services
December 2023 Newsletter
From the North High Student Services Department:
The North High Student Services Department wants to remind everyone that we have wrapped up the first quarter of the school year and are now halfway into the second quarter - and working towards finishing the first semester of courses. A reminder that It is the semester grade that determines if credit is earned in the class, and the semester grade is the only grade that is posted on a student's transcript. If you have any questions about a failing or sub-standard grade and what it may take to improve the grade for the semester then we would highly encourage you to contact the teacher(s) of the class(es) in question. Other general credit questions can also be directed towards the counselors.
This time of the year is always nostalgic and very special for many different reasons. Some of those reasons are getting the opportunity to create special memories with those dear to us, spending time with family, and extending warm, heart-felt wishes to friends and co-workers. On behalf of the North Student Services Department we would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as you spend the Holiday Season with friends and families.
North has five counselors, each with a caseload of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. There is also a School Social Worker, School Psychologist, Reading Specialist and a Transition Specialist located within the Student Services Office. Please feel free to contact us any time with your questions or concerns.
Thank you,
The North High Student Services Department
Information for Senior Students
FAFSA for College Bound Seniors (UPDATE)
Due to major changes, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid has indicated they will be ready to offer the simplified application for the upcoming cycle. However, they are delaying the release of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) until December 2023, two months after the usual October 1st release. Presently the department has stated that the 2024-2025 FAFSA will be ready mid-December 2023. However, they are not required by law to have it available until January 1st, 2024.
There will be an informational meeting on Financial Aid and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) scheduled at North High School on Tuesday, December 5th at 6pm in the North High Commons to review the FAFSA changes and process. Contact your student's assigned counselor if you have any questions.

Important Local Scholarship Info and Updates
The North High Local Scholarships and the Sheboygan Public Education Foundation scholarships are two of the primary scholarship sources for our students. Each year there are hundreds-of-thousands of dollars (some years over a million dollars) that are given out to our North students by donors in our local area. This community support is truly remarkable and one that needs to be taken advantage of by our students. All senior students who are looking to attend a 2 or 4 year college next year are highly encouraged to apply. This is an ongoing process throughout the year - do not wait until things are due to get started with learning about what opportunities, timelines and processes exist for you.

CAPP Courses for College Credit
With the advent of Lakeland University CAPP courses being free this year for SASD high school students, along with the other CAPP and Transcripted course opportunities that students have access to, it is important to understand what it means to be "officially enrolled" in these types of courses. CAPP and Transcripted courses mean that those courses are offered for college credit and that students can/will receive a recorded grade on a college transcript. This means that a student's official college G.P.A. also starts with a CAPP or Transcripted course(s) taken in high school. Any/all CAPP or Transcripted courses that are taken in high school - and that college credit is granted for - needs to be reported to colleges when filling out college applications. CAPP and Transcripted course processes, timelines and procedures for signing up for - or opting out of - college credit can be answered by the teacher of the CAPP or Transcripted class.
There will be a district letter coming out very soon regarding the enrollment process of students into the Lakeland University CAPP courses starting this year. All other CAPP courses will still have their official enrollment processes and deadlines (as it was previously).
Gear Up Program

Calling All Students! Opportunity to Experience Germany first hand - Staying with German Student & Family
The Sheboygan Chapter of People to People has been sponsoring an annual exchange with Sheboygan’s sister city, Esslingen, Germany since 1970. Esslingen is a charming city of about 100,000 located in Southwest Germany on the banks of the Neckar River, near Stuttgart. Since that time over 170 Sheboygan County high school students have participated in this unique program. Many have made life long friendships. “For us, the student exchanges provide the best avenue to help foster the understanding of people and cultures with the youth of our community.” said President - Bob Quasius. People to People exchanges are a rare opportunity to experience another country and culture first hand. The student is not staying in a hotel and visiting local tourist attractions. They stay in a family home learning how a German family lives on a daily basis from food, job to transportation and more.
Please see below for more information about this program
Feel free to contact me with questions. Thank you!

Students riding Shoreline Metro buses!
If you ride the Shoreline Metro Bus Service
The primary method for utilizing this program is through a phone. If you have a phone you will not receive a paper voucher.
Paper vouchers are ONLY for students who do not have a phone. Paper vouchers will not be accepted for students that have forgotten their phone or have a dead phone. (Phones can be charged on Shoreline Metro’s buses). If you do not have your phone you will have to pay the student fare
Vouchers for students that already have a paper bus pass, will not be given a new voucher each week. If a student is losing their bus pass continually , Shoreline Metro will only accept 1 voucher per month, per student. Shoreline Metro tracks all vouchers and may deny the student if this practice continues.
