ONEWHERO AREA SCHOOL - 28th May 2021
Principals Message:
Kia ora whaanau,
This week we celebrated the 40 years of service to education Mr Rowe and Mrs Pollock have given to Onewhero Area School. We are lucky to have two great teachers as part of our school community. OAS wants to express their gratitude for their service, and may it continue for years to come.
Onewhero Area School also celebrated 40 years since it was renamed Onewhero Area School.
We also celebrated science week this week. Students participated in daily quizzes and competitions all encouraging participation in the sciences.
As part of our review processes, we are wanting to see if you are getting the information you need around student achievement. Here is a quick 3 question survey. Please take a couple of minutes to fill it in. It is important we hear from as many parents and caregivers as possible. https://forms.gle/FNt9yJEbKAKEPgir7
Lastly just a couple of reminders, the school ground blessing is on the 31st of May at 7am, please RSVP for catering.
We are holding a wellbeing curriculum hui and feedback session on Monday 14th of June at 6:30pm in the Junior Learning Centre. Please make sure you have looked at the draft curriculum and come with ideas around things we have missed or could improve on.
Rebecca Bills
Tumuaki/Principal
Onewhero Area School
I wanted to provide a couple of quick updates for our community from the BOT.
Firstly thank you to Rachel Hagan for her support to our school and BOT over the last 2 years. Rachel has made the tough decision to take a step back from her role as a BOT member due to existing commitments and our meeting on Tuesday was her last. Rachel has been a strong supportive voice for our school and her governance expertise as an ECE Head Teacher (amongst other things) will be missed by us all. We have really enjoyed serving with Rachel and will communicate next steps around this vacancy in due course.
Most of our BOT and SLT met with ERO for a professional development workshop on Tuesday 18 May to understand the new MOE process for evaluating schools from 2021. We were excited to understand how this will benefit our students and believe there will be some clear opportunities to lift student achievement and wellbeing by focusing on clear strategic areas moving forward. Next steps will be ERO visiting our school and conducting a review with SLT and staff to build a baseline plan and then helping to formulate relevant and achievable goals. Rebecca will provide further context for you soon.
As always feel free to reach out to me
Regards,
Owein Greaves

Cheques Exiting the Banking System:
As you are probably aware the Banks are in the process of exiting cheques from the Banking system. We have been notified by ANZ, that they will no longer accept cheques as of 31st May 2021. Therefore, as a School, we are no longer able to accept cheques as a payment option. We accept Eftpos and Cash at the School Office, with Internet Banking being our preferred method of payment. The details for this are;

Please put your child’s name as a reference and the reason for the payment.
Thanks and kind regards

APOPO – The next day
In the past few years Aotearoa – New Zealand has unfortunately led the world in youth suicide statistics. Much has been written and talked about, but what can actually be done locally to help our students and community? Using the analogy of a cliff, we do not want to have an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff to pick up the pieces there. We want to build metaphorical fences at the top of the cliff. Even better we want to build those fences hundreds of metres back from the edge of that metaphorical cliff.
At Onewhero Area School, we are about to embark on a programme called Āpōpō – The Next Day. The programme equips our students with some basic and effective tools so that they can feel confident in their role of supporting those around them. We want to give our students the skills to become an even better family member or friend.
We will deliver the programme to our Year 12 and 13 students next week on Wednesday 2 June.
The Āpōpō programme delivers helpful information, tips and tools presented by trained facilitators. It is super interactive, involving games, activities and opportunities for participants to practice what they’ve learned through the use of role-playing in a safe environment.
Āpōpō provides tools for helping our friends, our whanau and ourselves. It looks at the warning signs of someone who is struggling and it emphasises the power and practice of listening. It recognises the importance of asking questions in a safe space, explores the concept, ‘Safe for now’, it teaches skills that anyone can utilise, regardless of their qualification and embraces a holistic approach to health.
Āpōpō is about seeking to add to “the village” of help that already exists and empower youth to become part of that village. Through the learning, it should allow students to improve their relationships with friends and remove some of the stereotypes around talking about how we feel. We expect that it will provide opportunities for our kids to recognise certain behaviours early, ask good questions and then get their friend to the rest of “the village” for more professional help.
There will be a letter which goes to all yr12 and 13 students this week with more information. If you have any questions please email me at j.wootton@onewhero.school.nz
Year 10 Careers Week:
Last week was very busy for the Year 10 cohort with the Careers Week. We had a range of presenters come into the school including;
- The Young Workers Resource Centre (YWRC) who talked about rights and responsibilities in the work place.
- Hemi Aldworth who used to be the school caretaker and is now a Fire Fighter talked about the Fire Service.
- Two police women came and discussed careers in the NZ Police.
- Two representatives from the Navy and Army talked about careers in the defence force.
On Wednesday the students participated in work experience in a range of local businesses, and those that couldn’t secure a placement were taken to Wintec in Hamilton to see the campus.
On Thursday the whole Year 10 group went to the Careers Expo at the ASB showgrounds where there were lots of stalls for the students to talk to people about different universities, tertiary providers, and training organisations.
What a fantastic week for our students, and we would really like to send a warm thank you to everyone who made this possible and contributed to the week. This provides valuable insights for our students as they start to make decisions for their futures.
Attached are some photos from the week.
Level 3 Geography Trip to Sunset Beach 20th May:
Last week the Level 3 Geography students had a day trip to Okariha/Sunset Beach. The purpose of this trip was to gather data on various coastal processes and investigate the erosion near the car park. We were super lucky with the weather – it rained on the way out there and as soon as we parked it stopped! We had a great day, busy and tiring but successful. Thanks to Pam McArley for being the assistant teacher!
Level One Geography trip - Opuatia Stream 14th May
On the 14th May the Level One Geography students had a day trip to investigate the changes that occur along the Opuatia Stream. This is a significant local tributary into the Waikato River, and the learning further supports their understanding of the Waikato Awa as our local taonga. We had a great day, starting at the source of the Opuatia Stream on the Ritchie’s farm, then collecting data near the start of Ponganui Road, and finally collecting data at Churchill Road where the stream enters the Waikato River. What a change! We saw Koi Carp, and different land use, so now the students need to write up their findings, Well done team Level 1 Geo!
Onewhero Ag Day 2021 - Saturday 2nd October:
Onewhero Ag Day Volunteers Meeting
Monday 31 May, 7.00pm
Ag Days, or Calf Clubs, are an annual tradition for rural schools and encourage children to learn about the care of animals by rearing a lamb, goat, calf and/or chickens. Onewhero Ag Day is organised each year by a group of parents who take great joy in keeping this tradition alive.
Half of our Ag Day Committee (including the Ag Day Coordinator) have moved on to other endeavours. This means we need some new and enthusiastic parents to step up and take ownership of the event. The Committee works in partnership with the school (they organise the indoor exhibits, food stalls and refreshments).
To spread the workload, there are five main roles that need to be filled:
- Ag Day Coordinator - Communicate information to the school and wider community and manage the whole event.
- Sponsorship Coordinator - Communicate with potential sponsors (from June), manage donated items, and ensure sponsors are properly acknowledged.
- Prizegiving Coordinator - Order trophies and ribbons, collate results, oversee prizegiving, and arrange engraving of trophies.
- Spud in the Bucket Coordinator - Advertise the competition (from June), take entries (via online form), purchase seed potatoes and buckets (or arrange sponsorship), organise distribution and return of potatoes and buckets, process entries and collate results.
- Chicken Coordinator - Advertise the sale of baby chickens (from June), take orders (via online form), organise pick-up and distribution of baby chickens and feed packs.
The parents who have left the Committee are happy to share their knowledge to ensure Ag Day continues to be a success, and the kids don’t miss out on a unique rural experience. If you're keen and able to help make Ag Day a fantastic event for the kids and community, then come along to the volunteers meeting to find out more. If you're unable to make the meeting, but can help organise Ag Day, then please email onewheroagday@gmail.com
IMPORTANT … If we do not get enough volunteers to coordinate the event, then Onewhero Ag Day 2021 is unlikely to go ahead.
