Dear Brown MS Community,
The spring season continues to provide us with many holidays to recognize. This coming Wednesday night is the start of the Jewish celebration of Passover. I wish all members of our community that are celebrating “chag Pesach samech” or "Happy Passover". Additionally, this coming week is holy week for Christian members of our community. Friday marks the observance of Good Friday, and there is no school that day. I wish all families observing these holidays a blessed observance.
April is Arab American Heritage Month. In 2019, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Michigan.) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan), introduced a resolution to Congress to proclaim April as National Arab American Heritage Month. In April of 2021 it was recognized by President Joe Biden. Click here for more information about how to celebrate this month.
April is also Autism Acceptance Month which is near and dear to my heart. When my son was in early elementary school, he was diagnosed with what was then called Aspergers Syndrome, a form of Autism. I remember the day we received his diagnosis - the mixture of feelings, including a sense of relief to finally understand what was happening with my quirky boy. Growing up on the spectrum was both magical and challenging. My son was an expert on very specific topics (Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, geography and world history), but related to adults better than his peers which was a constant worry for me. He struggled with coordination, flexibility and time management, but was a master at imagination, spatial reasoning and historical facts. There were tough moments and amazing moments, and I wouldn't trade any of it for the world. Each hurdle he conquered was a celebration. Each "failure" was an opportunity to learn.
He is now in college, and while there are still many challenges to face, he is becoming more self-sufficient and flexible each day. My husband and I are traveling to see him tonight to celebrate his 22nd birthday on Saturday. (Yes, he was my April Fools baby - and I can't wait to see him!) For all of you with children who are neurodiverse - you've got this! Know that every moment, however challenging, is an opportunity to learn, love and grow together.
I wish you a good weekend,
Kim Lysaght, Principal

Report Cards!
Term 2 report cards were printed and sent home with students this past week. They are also available to view on Aspen. Just click here to login. Throughout the school year, academic expectations and challenge increase which may result in grades that are a bit lower than first term. However, a stand-alone letter grade doesn't tell the complete story about what is going well nor does it explain what they need to work on. Throughout the term, teachers give students specific feedback on assignments and much of this can be found on Schoology. Our term report cards do provide information to students through teacher comments. We encourage students to not only look at the letter grade, but also look closely at the comments from teachers. These are meant to help students determine what their goals should be for the remainder of the school year. Please talk over the report card with your child.
NPS Budget Information
This past Wednesday Kathy Smith, Interim Superintendent, presented the proposed NPS budget to the school committee. With the failure of the operating override, there will be significant cuts for our school district. You can view the information from her presentation by clicking on the links below.

Tenacity Challenge Team
Brown Middle School 7th graders represented us proudly at the Tenacity Challenge at Bedford High School on March 18th. The Tenacity Challenge is an annual academic scholarship competition for teams of Latinx and African-American students from urban and suburban high schools across Massachusetts. Students on our team are: Violeta Gonzalez Vanegas, Jared Levy, Hailey Nesvacil, Gabe Norton, Tyson Norton, Cerise Pierre, Mariela Weiss, and Ariana Xible-Silva. Below they are pictured along with the bench they designed for their leadership project. Their description of the project is below:
"For our Leadership Action Project we chose to paint a bench that our community can use. We used a bench from our school’s mindfulness garden and sanded it and then painted it. You will notice that the two main colors are black and white. These colors symbolize segregation. The handprints represent the many cultures that blur the lines that divide us. We asked the students and adults in our community to submit quotes by Black and Latinx individuals, and we also asked for general positive messages. We wrote those on the bench.
We chose this project because we want to highlight the struggles that people of color have faced throughout history and still encounter today. The colors of the handprints represent the people who are working toward change.
In conversations with students and teachers, we found out that there have been many instances of microaggressions between students. Students have used the n-word and other slurs that are directed toward LGBTQ students and religious comments. We created this bench as a symbol of unity. We asked students to write messages of hope that could go on the bench."
Congratulations on a job well done and special thanks to Michele Shin for all of her work as the advisor of this group!

Allergen Information
Dear NPS families,
Please note that the Newton Public Schools has been notified of a change to ingredients in two food items offered through our school lunch program. Please be advised of the ingredient change if you have a student with a soybean or sunflower allergy.
The change is as follows:
The tater tots and any oven-baked french fry product ingredient and nutrition label now reads:
(Contains One Or More Of The Following Oils: Canola, Soybean, Cottonseed, Sunflower, Corn.)
Pictures of the labels are attached for your reference.
This information has now been added to FD Meal Planner, our food service website. However, the information came to us mid-month so this is new allergen information for those who may have reviewed the menus earlier in the month.
