MSAA Matters
February Volume I
February 10th
Dear Colleagues,
I know each of you joins me in wishing Executive Director, Bill Gaine good health and happiness in his retirement in September 2021. In the meantime, we will continue to benefit from his exceptional stewardship and guidance.
This edition is dedicated to providing resources for Black History Month. The only caveat I offer is that these resources can and should be used all year round, incorporated into the curriculum across all disciplines at all levels. As each of you look for ways to take action to help your school/district achieve that next level of inclusivity, remember Ijeoma Oluo words in her book So You Want To Talk About Race: "We cannot talk our way out of a racially oppressive system. We can talk our way into understanding, and we can then use that understanding to act." See below for resources for all grade levels-there are many videos for use with students, videos to use with staff and your parent community as well as compelling articles. Additionally, thanks to Henry Turner , Principal of Newton North High School and current MSAA Board Memberl for the resources he has provided and Craig Martin, Executive Director of Bridge Boston Charter School in Boston and former MSAA Board Member for his Wakelet, chock full of outstanding resources.
I have also included Larry Ferlazzo's piece from Education Week, February 2nd, the first in a series of two interviews. In this first one he interviews an 8th grade Boston Public School teacher regarding her thoughts on all of the adult talk on students losing ground during this pandemic. I know from our Ring Central Gatherings this is very much on your minds. Click here.
