Mission Elementary
Riding the Wave of Excellence!
September 17, 2023
Dear Mission Families,
Thank you for your partnerhip by joining us during Back to School Night! It was exciting to see our families in person and seeing everyone familiarize themselves and connect with our campus. Did you stop by our community partners' tables or meet our PASS Mentor or counselor? As a Community School, we are fortunate to have these amazing staff members as a resource for our families. Be sure to introduce yourselves to Mr. Sandoval and Mr. Treherne whenever you're on campus! We are also grateful for the support of our High School volunteers. Ms. R., our School Community Coordinator communicates with our local high schools to provide opportunities for students interested in volunteering. We are a great community!

Some of our Week's Highlights
Community Connections
Pley Sport is coming to Mission Elementary!
Pley Sport is an organization that is dedicated to providing enriched physical education to students. Pley Sport will be facilitating programming with Mission students (grades 1st through 5th) during their lunch time recess. This will include a new curriculum each week where students will play various games, activities and sports. Our goal is to provide students with a new avenue of organized play that not only supports their physical development but strengthens good sportsmanship, creates positive attitudes and has students establish respect for themselves and others.
The Pley Sport schedule is:
Monday & Tuesday: Meets with 1st and 2nd Grades
Thursday & Friday: Meets with 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades
We will have two coaches onsite who will be able to meet with 30 students per grade level. Not every student will get to participate every day however there will be many chances throughout the school year!
Counselor's Corner
Hello Mission Elementary Families!
My name is Emanuel Sandoval and I am the new school counselor for the year. I have been a part of OUSD for a while now and I am very excited to continue to work for this district. I’m coming over to Mission from another elementary school in the district, so I am familiar with supporting students at this age. As a school counselor, my most important job is to support the students at the school. I support students in three different areas: academics, social-emotional, and college/career. Being at a primary school, I tend to focus more on social-emotional and academic aspects but also start to get students to think about possible careers and/or college in the future.
Some of the ways I help to support students here at Mission are through individual counseling, social skills group counseling, clubs, classroom lessons, peer conflict resolution through mediation, classroom guidance, academic support, and more. As a school counselor I not only support students, but I also support their families. I try to work closely with parents/guardians by communicating about their student's progress or connecting with families to help seek additional support services/referrals.
My goal here at Mission is to help students see the benefits in being a kind person, being vulnerable, being academically successful, and gaining a sense of community where they want to support other people or peers.
You'll often see me at the front of the school either greeting or helping during dismissal. If you do see me, feel free to say hello! If you don't happen to see me and would like to contact me, here is contact information: Emanuel.sandoval@oside.us or (760) 966-8777

Traffic Safety Reminders
As we fully enter into the new school year Mission Elementary would like share some traffic safety reminders to our families:
Please DRIVE SLOWLY! Children are present and are difficult to see from the driver’s perspective. There are tight corners, and blind spots that make children vulnerable. Slowing down is one of the best preventive measures.
Children should HOLD HANDS with an adult and AVOID RUNNING! Make sure that children are not leaving the front exit without a parent with them. Walk in designated, marked walkways or sidewalks when possible.
As the lot is small and does not have the capacity to accommodate all of our families, please be considerate at drop off and pick up times and limit your parking time. Remember, our front gates open at 7:45 a.m. and school begins promptly at 8:15 a.m. There is plenty of time to drop off your student.
Park in designated and appropriate areas. Parking in fire lanes or areas that are not clearly marked for parking blocks drivers view and space for navigation. It is a safety hazard that we take seriously.
Don’t block the driveway. There are other cars in-front and behind your vehicle during morning drop off. We do not want to stop the flow of traffic and recommend that drivers stay in the driver’s seat. Our staff will do our best to open the door for your student.
These rules are set in place to ensure the safety of all of our children. Slow down, be considerate, and stay safe!
