Book Swap!: The books are slowly coming in for our annual Book Swap organized by the BSES Reading Department and HSA. We need many more for our Book Swap to fly! As an added bonus, any class with 100% participation in the Book Swap will be rewarded with a Pajama Day! Students can send in donations anytime from now until the Swap, which will be held on Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th. Check out the FLYER for more info.

Cradles to Crayons Collection - DEADLINE APPROACHING!!: The Cradles to Crayons Collection organized by BSES Helping Hands Club and the First Grade Classes for Cradles to Crayons Philadelphia wraps up on January 31st, which means we have LESS THAN A WEEK to go to destash and donate to a great cause! Check out the FLYER or HSA Website for more details on what items can and cannot be accepted! Many thanks to those who have already donated!

The Kids Heart Challenge continues in Physical Education Class. Students have been educated on heart healthy choices and challenged to pick one goal to set for themselves that would improve their heart health. Goals include getting 60 minutes of exercise each day, choosing water over sugary drinks, eating less sodium, staying away from tobacco products, eating more fruits and vegetables each day, and educating others about heart health. Throughout the month, we have been working on our jump rope skills and will have a culminating event during classes the week of February 4th-8th.

Students have received information about the event in their take home folder. If you would like to be part of this event, you can Register here , and search for Bethel Springs Elementary. All donations raised will go to the American Heart Association and the top fundraiser from each grade will get to choose to pie the principal or their PE teacher!

The Final Competition of the National Geographic Bee was held on Friday, January 25th. Ten finalists competed to be the school champion--Saanvi Singh, Sricharan Ilyanambi, Advik Jasti, Jason Chamberlain, Zachary Baldino, Shreya Bose, Jake Schwartz, Charlie Czerwinski, Dyuti Krothapalli, and Braeden Bisch. Our school champion is fifth grader Sricharan Ilyanambi (pictured above on the right next to runner-up Zach Baldino). Congratulations to Sricharan! His next step will be to take a qualifying test for the state bee to be held in Harrisburg in March!

The Bethel Springs Elementary Spelling Bee will be held on Friday, February 1st from 9:00-11:00 AM. A preliminary round will be held on Wednesday, January 30th at 3:30 to determine 20 finalists for the bee on Friday 2/1. Two winners will go on to compete at the county level on Saturday, February 23, 2019. We wish all of our participants the best of luck!

The Grade 5 Boys' Leadership Group (Sean Harkins, Leo Kakad, Aidan Simpkiss, Kevin Haugh, Ian Culver, and Jacob Maginnis) has organized a Chess and Checkers Club at recess time for their 5th Grade classmates. This has been perfect for these days when the cold/inclement weather brings many indoor recess days! The club welcomes novice and experienced players. In the picture above Sean and Leo teach classmates how to play Chess.

Family Fun BINGO Night: Forms are still being submitted for Family Fun BINGO Night on Friday, February 8th! Register ASAP for your best chance at your preferred session. Attendees pay just $5 per person for an evening of fun and games and raffles to win AWESOME prizes! Jaguar Color Dash - Sponsorship Opportunities: The annual Jaguar Color Dash planning is underway! The Color Dash is scheduled for Friday, May 31st (rain date June 4th) - be on the lookout for many more exciting details to follow!! This year our Art and Literature Fling will focus on Greece! Each week in our announcements we will include a fact about this fascinating culture that stretches back thousands of years and has had such incredible influence on the world. PLEASE SHARE THE WEEKLY FACT WITH THE KIDS! In May, around the time of our Art and Literature Fling, there will be an electronic quiz on the weekly facts sent home for families to complete. All families achieving a perfect score will have their names put in a prize basket raffle to be drawn at the conclusion of the Art and Literature Fling on Wednesday, May 28th (you'll have to be present to win)!

Garnet Valley Solo Fest - Sat Feb 23, 2019

All GV students grades 5-12 band, orchestra, chorus, or piano lessons are invited to perform a solo in the 2019 GV Solo Fest. Students will perform an approved solo piece for two music adjudicators (not in front of an audience), and will receive written feedback and participation recognition. Several outstanding performers will be selected for special recognition and may be selected to perform in our 2019 Garnet Valley Music Gala Concert on March 24.
