Weather
We have a weather station right on the GVS playground that gives the temperature we use to determine if we are inside/outside at recess.
Link:
https://ambientweather.net/share/2B5nwU
We will be using the "Feels like" temperature from this station that incorporates wind chill.
From the Family Handbook:
"There will be outside recess everyday, unless it is raining or below 10° Fahrenheit (with consideration of wind chill)."
Please bookmark the link below for your personal reference.
File cabinets
This worked before, so trying again!
Once again, before we make a purchase, I am reaching out to see if anyone knows of any file cabinets that are looking for a new home.
If you do, please email our facilities director, Rodney Page at rpage@gvshawks.org.
Want to be part of our GVS morning?
Every morning at GVS classes watch a morning announcement video. These good morning videos are sometimes created by GVS adults and sometimes by students. They are less than 5 minutes and generally include:
- good morning & well wishes for the day
- happy birthday to ____
- a piece of learning, a joke, a tidbit of information...
Would your family like to participate by creating a good morning announcement for GVS?
There is a sign up at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C45AFA82FA3FF2-53156721-good.
Once you sign up, I will try to remember to email you who to wish a happy birthday to. If I forget, please email me!
Created videos can be sent to Mrs. McFarland (kmcfarland@gvshawks.org).
A reminder that all video content needs to be school appropriate (including no politics or religion). If we question the appropriateness of content, we will not share the video.
Weekly Update with Mrs. Carey, Our School Nurse
Did you know that the gut and brain communicate through
the gut-brain axis, influencing mood, emotions,
and overall well-being?
Quick, pre-packaged, grab-and-go options, while inexpensive and yummy, do not provide any nutritional value. They just fill your kids with empty calories and chemicals that will later lead to health issues, such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart conditions and cancer. Behavioral issues are another side effect of eating these.
Making sure your student has a well balanced diet, especially
while at school will:
Help them stay healthy during the cold and flu season
Feed their brains so they can learn
Feed their bodies so they can grow
Make them less likely to have mood swings
Reduce visits to the health office with tummy aches, headaches, etc…
Help them to grow into amazing adults with fewer health issues
Next time you reach for those processed foods, think about what you are really feeding your child. A healthy gut helps prevent illnesses and diseases in everyone!
From our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Buckley
Jarrett J. Krosoczka will be visiting GVS on Thursday, November 21st. He’ll be sharing his experience as a writer and explain how he gets his ideas for the many books he has written.
If you would like to purchase one of his books and have it signed by Mr. Krosoczka, please visit this site to place your order. https://highfivebooks.org/pages/grantham-jjk-visit
Books will be signed and delivered to your child on the day of his visit. Please do not send orders to school. All ordering must be done online.
Decoding vs. Encoding
Decoding and encoding are two processes that are essential for reading and writing:
Decoding
The process of translating written words into sounds, or reading. To decode a word, you need to understand the letters, the sounds they make, and how they blend together.
Here are some simple decoding activities you can do at home to help children learn to read:
Blending
Practice blending sounds to read words. For example, the word "fast" can be sounded out as individual sounds (/f/…/a/…/s/…/t/) or blended smoothly as /faasst/.
Word families
Teach children about word families, which are groups of words with the same ending sound and spelling pattern. This helps children read words they haven't seen before.
Rhyming
Play rhyming games, such as sorting words by endings and asking children to find a rhyme for each word. You can also make up a deck of cards and play a clapping game to help children remember rhyming words.
Read aloud
Read stories aloud to children so they can become active listeners and immerse themselves in the text.
Splitting Syllables
Teach children how to break down words with more than one syllable into syllables.
Encoding
The process of breaking down spoken words into sounds and writing them down, or spelling. To encode a word, you need to segment the sounds and match them to the corresponding letters.
Here are some simple encoding activities you can do at home to help your child learn to encode words:
Word ladder
Draw a ladder on a whiteboard or use a work mat, and write a word at the bottom. Have your child change the beginning letter of the word to create a new word, and continue building the ladder.
Phonics dice
Write a letter on each side of a pair of wooden blocks or alphabet dice. Have your child roll the blocks and say the letter sound and a corresponding word.
CVC word cards ( consonant - vowel - consonant)
Help your child build phonemic awareness and phonics skills by building CVC words letter-by-letter.

Can Tabs for David’s House
The Grantham Village School third grade class is collecting can tabs for David's House. Please send them in whenever you can. We have collected about 1,400 pounds since we began 20 plus years ago! We drop them off at David's House, where a volunteer brings them to a recycling facility for cash. The money is used to help defray operating expenses. Last year we collected 107 pounds! Let’s see if we can collect over 100 pounds again this school year.
Click on the David’s House link to learn more about this community treasure.
Thank you for your support!
