Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you well. We're excited to share some fantastic news about our upcoming school year. Our students are set to embark on an incredible leadership journey as part of the inaugural "Team Brave" student leadership group.

During our recent meeting, students were presented with various opportunities to make a positive impact on our school community. They signed up for roles that align with their interests and strengths, demonstrating a true commitment to making this year extraordinary.

We are excited to announce that our school will be celebrating Unity Day on October 18th, a day dedicated to promoting kindness, acceptance, and unity among our students.

To emphasize our commitment to these values, we invite everyone to wear orange on this special day. The color orange symbolizes a world without bullying, where everyone is included, respected, and valued for who they are.

Throughout the day, we will engage students in various activities and discussions centered around unity and the importance of standing up against bullying. It's a wonderful opportunity to reinforce these essential values with your child.

We believe that involving parents in these celebrations can make a significant impact on our students, as they see that unity extends beyond the school walls and into our community.

Welcome to Elger Bay if you are new! I thought I’d take a minute to introduce myself and explain my role this year, how it looks different than last year and how it supports our students and staff. First my name is Tricia Drinnon and I live here on the island and have been at Elger Bay since 2015.

I have run our Title/LAP program for the past 3 years supporting our screening, intervention instruction/support and paperwork for reading. Although our focus has been on reading, we did branch out last year with piloting Delta Math Interventions in Grades 3 & 5. This program showed a lot of promise in supporting both students to increase their foundational mathematical understanding and teachers with lessons & monitoring skill deficits.

The district has re-titled the Title/LAP coordinator position as the MTSS Interventionist this year. MTSS stands for Multi Tiered Systems of Support. The MTSS system has a broader scope which includes reading, math and behavior supports for all students and staff. Title/LAP funding still supports this position and school-wide screening data will drive our decisions/support. Our support in reading and math has now expanded to all students during a 30 minute dedicated time each day. We are lucky to have extra support staff during the intervention blocks and you will see several small groups targeting specific skills during that time in most classrooms.

I just wanted to clarify a few questions that have come up since last Friday’s communication in regard to our new math intervention model.

• Our screening is a first step in understanding how students perform on foundational math skills from the previous grade’s standards.

• Each skill has 3 questions that help us see how students are doing. If they miss 1 or 2 of the 3, they are identified as benefiting from additional support.

• This practice/support only lasts until they show us mastery on 3 data points on our daily quick checks. Then they move into independent practice activities.

• There are various factors that might trigger them to show a need for additional instruction beyond unfinished understanding of the skill. We are looking for automaticity so how long each problem takes them to solve is one factor. This might mean they need more practice with their facts; additions/subtraction or multiplication/division. Another factor could be effort on taking the screener.

• The first session is a review and some students just need this to recall how to do the skill.

• Progress will be shared with you via your child’s teacher as the year progresses. This might be emails, conferences and progress reports.

Again please reach out with any questions or concerns that you have as we continue to build this support system for all students.

A new community resource is now online. StanCamPreschools.com was created by the Community Resource Center of Stanwood-Camano and features information about all the childcare and preschool programs within the Stanwood-Camano School District.

The Stanwood-Camano School District follows the COVID-19 guidance for schools and child care from the Washington Department of Health.

We adhere to infectious disease prevention strategies as part of everyday operations, and we are prepared to implement additional disease prevention strategies if there is an outbreak of any respiratory illnesses, including flu and RSV.

The current emphasis is on students or staff staying home when sick. Please view our When to Stay Home webpage for more details about what symptoms to monitor. The webpage also includes the state Department of Health’s updated guidance on making decisions around COVID exposure and symptoms.

Substitute jobs are fun, flexible positions that can adapt to your schedule. You can work a few hours in our kitchens or helping as a crossing guard or helping teachers and students in our classrooms.
