A Message from the Superintendent
Dear TTUSD Families,
As we navigate the heart of autumn and embrace the vibrant colors of October, I want to acknowledge a special group of individuals who bring their own kind of brilliance to our schools every day: our principals and assistant principals!
October is National Principal Month, and October 13-19 is also the Week of the School Administrator. It's a time to celebrate the incredible leaders at the helm of each of our schools. These dedicated individuals are so much more than administrators; they are mentors, advocates, and champions for every student who walks through their doors. They foster a sense of community, guide our educational endeavors, and work tirelessly to create safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environments where all students can thrive.
From setting the academic tone to supporting our teachers, our principals and assistant principals play a crucial role in TTUSD's daily success. They are the heart and soul of our schools, and their unwavering commitment to our students is truly inspiring.
Please join me in expressing our sincere gratitude to this fantastic team! Take a moment to thank your child's principals for their hard work and dedication. They deserve all the recognition we can give them.
Warm Regards,
Kerstin Kramer
Superintendent Chief Learning Officer
District Strategic Plan Check-In
We're excited to share progress on two projects demonstrating our commitment to the priorities outlined in the TTUSD Strategic Plan.
To address the critical need for affordable housing in our region, the Board of Trustees recently approved an agreement with Education Housing Partners Inc. to conduct a Workforce Housing Feasibility Study in partnership with the Truckee Tahoe Workforce Housing Agency JPA. This study will explore the possibility of developing workforce housing on vacant portions of the Alder Creek Middle School site. It will analyze the property, building constraints, potential layouts, cost estimates, and financing options. This is a crucial first step in determining the feasibility of this project and how we can best utilize district resources to provide affordable housing options for our employees and is directly linked to priority 2.3, which is to continue the ongoing development of employees, systems, infrastructure, and facilities while utilizing financial resources in a fiscally sustainable manner to support effective learning and equitable outcomes. This project could also help ensure academic achievement for all students by recruiting and retaining educators and staff, a goal outlined in priority 1.2 of the Strategic Plan.
We're also thrilled to announce the new Field House opening at Truckee High School! This 6,800-square-foot multi-sport facility features a synthetic turf field, perfect for year-round training and PE classes, no matter the weather. Originally a pool built in the 1970s, the space has been transformed into a versatile athletic facility with field markings for many sports. It will be a valuable resource for Truckee High School athletics and PE classes and our wider community. And since the Truckee-Donner Park and Recreation District initially built the facility, they'll have opportunities to offer programs in the new space. This project directly ties into Support Systems goal 2.3.1, which is to identify priority projects in the facility master plan using available funds.
Both projects represent our ongoing efforts to support our employees, enhance our facilities, and effectively utilize resources to provide our students with the best possible learning environment.
TTUSD Students Explore Future Pathways
From college fairs to career days and even specialized programs for students with diverse needs, TTUSD was a hub of college and career exploration this October!
All of our TTUSD high school students were invited to discover future possibilities at Truckee High School’s College & Career Fair. Over 200 students and families gathered to chat with representatives from universities and colleges nationwide. They also explored options beyond the traditional college route by connecting with vocational education programs, apprenticeship coordinators, and regional employment agencies. The event was a whirlwind of information about college life, financial aid, exciting career paths, and industry trends, giving students a glimpse into the many possibilities that lie ahead.
But the learning didn't stop there! That same evening, our WorkAbility program hosted an informative session for students with special needs and their families, highlighting inclusive college options and regional programs that support their continued education goals.
A few days later, some Sierra High students headed to Reno for a Construction Career Day, where they rolled up their sleeves and interacted with over 40 industry experts. They learned about the diverse trades in construction and what it takes to build a successful career in this hands-on field. Back at Sierra High, students were also inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of graduate Ignacio "Nacho" Diaz, owner of Elevated Experience Barber Studio, who shared his journey and passion for his craft.
Meanwhile, Truckee Elementary hosted its first-ever Career Day, a resounding success that brought the whole school together! Local community members representing various professions, from lawyers and writers to pilots and firefighters, shared their experiences and sparked curiosity among our youngest learners.
We're incredibly proud of our students for embracing these opportunities and taking charge of their future! And a big shout-out to our dedicated staff for creating these engaging experiences that help students consider their future paths. Seeing our students explore their passions and connect with the wider community is inspiring.
TTUSD High Schools Shine on AP Honor Roll
Congratulations to North Tahoe High School and Truckee High School for their outstanding 2023 AP School Honor Roll achievements! This prestigious award recognizes schools committed to expanding access to Advanced Placement courses and supporting student success.
North Tahoe High School earned the Gold award, demonstrating exceptional dedication to providing college-level opportunities. They even met platinum-level qualifications in two out of three criteria! The Lakers are setting a high bar, with an impressive 45% of the Class of 2024 scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam. A special shout-out to the staff and students for their hard work!
Truckee High School also received well-deserved recognition, achieving Silver status on the Honor Roll. This accomplishment highlights the school's commitment to rigorous academics and preparing students for college success. Congratulations to the entire Truckee High School team for their dedication!
We are incredibly proud of both schools for their commitment to academic achievement and for providing our students with the tools they need to succeed. Keep up the great work!

National Bullying Prevention Month | Creating a Culture of Kindness
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and all of our TTUSD schools are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students. We believe every student deserves to feel valued, respected, and supported.
All schools identify an annual school climate goal in their school accountability plan and use data from annual surveys to track progress. Additionally, our discipline policies have strong anti-bullying provisions, and we encourage reporting through open dialogues with students and parents.
Here are a few programs students are participating in.
Comprehensive Anti-Bullying Education: Our Second Step Social Skills Curriculum teaches students about bullying prevention, conflict resolution, and positive social behaviors. It’s utilized in kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms and specifically supports an anti-bullying school culture by providing students with a strong character education curriculum. Counseling groups, assemblies, and parent education nights supplement the curriculum and reinforce appropriate social skill development.
Peer Mentoring Programs: Link Crew in high schools and Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) in middle schools provide opportunities for older students to mentor younger ones, building positive relationships and fostering a sense of belonging. The programs train upperclassmen to make those new to the school feel welcome and discover what it takes to successfully transition into a new school.
Wellness Programs: Our Wellness Centers offer support groups, clubs, and mentoring programs to help students develop healthy coping mechanisms and connect with resources.
Restorative Practices: Programs like the Soul Shoppe's Peacemaker Program and GES Mentors teach students conflict resolution strategies to support their peers in resolving problems peacefully and promoting positive peer relationships.
Working together as a school community can create a culture where bullying is not tolerated and everyone feels safe and supported. Let's commit to making a difference during National Bullying Prevention Month and beyond.
TTUSD Receives $200,000 Farm-to-School Grant!
Ever wonder where the delicious food in your child's school lunch comes from? Thanks to a second round of funding for the CA Farm to School grant, TTUSD is bringing even more fresh, local ingredients to our cafeterias!
TTUSD's Food & Nutrition Services department has been awarded an additional $200,000 Farm-to-School Incubator Grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture, in addition to over $138,000 received in the 2021/2022 school year. We were thrilled to be selected as one of only 195 recipients out of 499 applicants—a testament to the great work of our team!
This grant will allow us to buy even more organic and local produce from the Tahoe Food Hub, which means more fresh fruits and vegetables for our students! The grant will also support exciting programs like farm field trips and classroom visits from local farmers, helping students learn where their food comes from and make healthy choices.

Digital Citizenship Month | Keeping Kids Safe Online
October is Digital Citizenship Month, a time for parents and educators to promote safe and responsible online behavior among our students.
As technology continues to play a central role in their lives, it’s crucial to teach children about the importance of protecting their data and privacy. One effective tip is to encourage open conversations about what personal information they should keep private and to help them set strong, unique passwords for their accounts. Additionally, remind them to think before they share any information online.
Visit Common Sense Media for more resources and tips on how to guide your children in securely navigating the digital world.
Thank You, Laura Brown, for your dedicated years of Service!
TTUSD extends its heartfelt gratitude and well wishes to Laura Brown, the incredible Executive Director of the Excellence in Education Foundation for the past 20 years, as she starts a new chapter. Laura's leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact on our students, staff, and schools.
Under Laura's leadership, the Excellence in Education Foundation has awarded over $5.8 million in grants to support innovative programs and learning opportunities within TTUSD. Her passion for education and ability to connect with the community has been instrumental in fostering a strong support network for our schools.
Her legacy will continue to inspire and benefit our students for years. Thank you, Laura, for your incredible service to the TTUSD community!
A Greener Future for TTUSD
Congratulations to TTUSD's Energy Conservation and Sustainability Program Manager Erica Mertens for being chosen as a 2024-2025 Leader in Sustainable Schools Fellow!
The Center for Green Schools, a national organization dedicated to creating healthy and sustainable learning environments, selected Erica as one of only five school leaders nationwide for this prestigious program. Throughout the year, she'll participate in specialized training and collaborate with other experts to develop even stronger sustainability initiatives for our district, such as reducing our carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency.
TTUSD is proud to support Erica in this important work and excited to be part of this national effort to create greener schools!
THS Students Shine at Candidate Forum!
Two Truckee High School students, Sophia Martin and Isaac Medina, recently demonstrated impressive public speaking and critical thinking skills at the Truckee Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum. They presented insightful pro and con arguments on Ballot Measure E (the Town of Truckee Essential Services Tax Measure), receiving rave reviews from the audience.
This is a fantastic example of our students engaging with important local issues and contributing to the community conversation. We're incredibly proud of their participation and the strong connection it builds between our schools and the Truckee community.
Congrats to Sophia and Isaac!
