Ensuring All Students and Educators Learn and Grow Every Day
Teaching, Leading and Learning Like Pirates
Challenge #12
We are extending Challenge #12 for another week. Relationships with students are absolutely critical for their success. You never know what is inside a student's invisible backpack and a positive word can carry a student. For Challenge #12, try saying things to a student such as:
▪ You matter.
▪ You are somebody.
▪ I believe in you.
▪ You have the potential to be great!
▪ I enjoy having you in class.

New Email Signature: In a continual effort to standardize the brand of our school district and school, we will be using the image above in our email signatures for all emails sent externally. The image clearly describes what we do best for students and is easy to understand. People take notice when they see the same unique brand repeatedly, which furthers public recognition of our purpose. Please save the image above and insert it into your email signatures. Also, please add our vision after the image: The St. Georges Way: Every student & every teacher will learn and grow every day. Here are some additional directions on how to add the image if needed.

ALICE Emergency Response Drill: We are going to conduct part III of our ALICE training on Tuesday, February 25th, at the beginning of 3rd period. This drill should not be a surprise to anyone. Please discuss thoroughly with your 3rd period class in advance of the drill. To initiate the drill, the RAVE Panic Button will be activated followed by a PA announcement. The PA announcement will state something similar to the following:
“This is a drill, there are reports of an armed assailant at (location). Respond according to your training.”
Following the announcement, a swift decision should be made to either evacuate the building or perform an enhanced lockdown (barricade) in the classroom. The option that you choose with your class is based on the given location of the armed assailant.
If your class decision is to evacuate, students and staff should exit the building at fire drill speed (walk) meant to simulate a run in a real-world situation. If your class decision is to perform an enhanced lockdown, then barricade the door using available resources in your classroom as practiced during November’s door barricade practice session. Remember, that any barricade is better than no barricade. Barricades can only be classified as good, better, and best. Administration will be in the hallways supporting the drill. We will also give a firm tug on barricaded doors. Please see additional notes below. All staff members and students should be active players in the drill. If you need to discuss any unusual circumstances, please see Dr. Harrison.
Stress to students in your third period class that the drill needs to be taken seriously and students and staff need to use their training to select their best option considering how they would respond in a real-world scenario.
Evacuating students should walk during the drill (no running).
Students and staff exiting the building must stop immediately after crossing the road that surrounds the school (the mote). They cannot go into the fields, front parking lot, or softball field side parking lots. They may cross the bus parking lot.
Teachers on third period planning are assigned to be outside at the start of third period to support evacuating students and staff and gather any straying students as they come out of the building. Please see the attached map below of locations for third period planning teacher placement around the building. These teachers are Mr. Culver, Mr. Stark, Mr. Wright, Mrs. Diodati, Ms. Mitchell, Mrs. Steward, Mrs. Janssen, Mrs. Tuson, and Ms. Stinson.
The road going around the building (like a mote) will be blocked off from motor traffic during the drill enabling students to safely cross the road and then stop.
We will make parents and local authorities aware of the drill.
Remember that the St. Georges Way is “Every student and every teacher will learn and grow everyday.” Drills are an opportunity for growth as we go outside of comfort zones.
Please see Dr. Harrison with any questions.

This week’s ACE meeting focused on reading and discussing articles and videos regarding the revision process. Below are a few takeaways from the articles read…
Revision is a part of the learning process. We have to continue to instill the growth mindset because there is value in learning from a mistake.
Even though we do not write as frequently in math, we do revise our thinking frequently and it is a similar process that is used in writing.
What we have learned to do over the years does not come “naturally” to students. As a result, we have to provide and be models to help our students understand how to go through the writing process as opposed to focusing on the end product.
To help students understand why they received particular grades, it is good to have them check their own work against a rubric. Students need to know the exact expectations of any writing task.
Students need actual lessons and activities before engaging in the writing process. Otherwise, instructors are merely assigning writing, not teaching it.
