Happy New Year to all of our Hawks View families! It is my hope that you all had time to relax and enjoy the holiday season with those you love.
Our character trait for November & December was gratitude. I am so grateful for this community and the ways we continue to show up for one another. Whether it’s donating food & toys to those in need, sending an email of thanks to a staff member, the trust you give us with your child(ren) each day, and numerous other ways…thank you for being part of our community! Wishing you all the best in the New Year and I look forward to our continued partnership in 2025. ~Mrs. Mitchell
A Message from our Instructional Coach, Mrs. Gauthier
Welcome back and hopefully your family found time to rest and relax over the two week break. Staff kicked off 2025 with a professional development day on Monday. Teachers spent the morning with their colleagues throughout all four elementary schools working on alignment of essential standards in the writing component of our HMH Into Reading and ¡Arriba la Lectura! curriculum. The rest of the day was spent in choice breakout sessions centered around student engagement in the classroom. It was a nice transition day back from break but Tuesday was full of excitement and buzz with students returning to the classrooms. Many of the takeaways from Monday's professional development day were put right into practice within the classroom. Students are utilizing accountable talk partners in PE and producing writing about their reading in the classroom. It always feels best to have students back at Hawks View.
Valuable Community Event Next Week!

December/January PE Update
We have been having a blast in PE over the past several weeks! Our younger students spent some time working on tracking objects like balloons, while our older students started with balloons and worked up to beginning volleyball skills. We also did a floor hockey unit that the kids absolutely loved. We have never done floor hockey at Hawks View and the kids overwhelmingly requested that it return. It was really fun seeing the kids work together to pass the puck around to score some amazing goals! This month, we are starting units in both soccer and basketball. Thanks to the funds raised by our students in the 2024 Fun Run, we were able to purchase a full set of new, colorful, junior-sized rubber basketballs that the kids have already started enjoying. As a basketball coach at the high school, Mr.Gregory is really excited to see the kids’ growth over the coming weeks and years! Fun Run funds also helped the PE department order lanyards, badge holders and pocket charts to help store and organize Mileage Club badges. Our HVPE Amazon Wish List can be found HERE. Thank you to those families that have helped us out by purchasing us pinnies, tunnels, balls, etc..Thank you!! And thank you for your continued support!

Dinner Night Out!

Vision Screening
We are offering a free vision screening for all students at Hawks View on Thursday, January 30th. This screening will be conducted by the Lions Club with the assistance of parent volunteers, using SPOT screening devices. The screening is painless and performed from a distance, without touching your child’s eyes or face.
Screening results will be available in about a week. Most children pass the exam. Due to the volume of paperwork, we will only send home "did not pass" results. These will be sent home via backpack mail.
Opt-Out Option - If you do not want your child to participate in the vision screening, please contact your school office to opt-out.
If you have any questions about the vision screening, please contact Health Services at 503-825-5093.
Financial assistance - If your child needs an eye exam or glasses, financial assistance may be available.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Tardies
Just a reminder that the bell to start class rings at 7:55 a.m. Any student not in their classroom at 7:55 a.m. is considered tardy and must have a slip from the office in order to enter the classroom. Students entering the classroom late causes a disruption to the learning environment for everyone. If you are dropping your child off in the morning, please leave enough time for them to get from the parking lot to their classroom before 7:55 a.m.
We also ask that you please use extra caution in the parking lots at school: drive slowly, watch for pedestrians and follow the school's traffic pattern in the lot at all times. Keep in mind, the small parking lot is NOT a student drop-off/pick-up area..
To keep traffic flowing, please do not get out of your vehicle in the car line during drop off or pick up. Follow signage and pull forward as far as possible before letting your child(ren) out of your vehicle. If you need to get out for any reason, we ask that you pull into a nearby parking spot and unload that way.
After School Change of Plans for Students
Please notify the office prior to 1:30 if you have a change of plans for your student(s) after school. Teachers often don’t have time to read emails during the day. Office staff will send notes to the classrooms to notify your student and the teacher of the change in plans.
When to Keep Your Student(s) Home
Please help us keep our students and staff healthy by keeping your children home when they are ill.
See the flyer below for District Guidelines on when to keep your students home. The guidelines are based on information from the Oregon Health Authority and the Oregon Department of Education
Inclement Weather Reminders/School Closures
With the falling leaves and the changing temperatures, before long it will once again be time to plan for possible inclement weather days. In the event of school closures or delays related to weather, our district will use the following methods of communication:
- ParentSquare– This is a school-to-home communication tool that will send district or school-level alerts, newsletters, or announcements to the parent/guardian information on file with the school. If your email address or phone number has changed, please update your contact information with your child’s school office.
- District Website – All high-priority alerts will be posted to the main SSD website (look for a red or green alert bar at the top of the page).
- District Social Media – The District is on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sherwoodschooldistrict88J or on Twitter at twitter.com/SherwoodSD
- FlashAlert – All emergency alerts and inclement weather closures/delays will be broadcast via FlashAlert. This is a free subscription service that alerts users via text or app notifications. Sign up at www.flashalert.net/signup or by downloading the FlashAlert app on your smartphone. If you have signed up for FlashAlert previously, please sign in to make sure your subscription is current. If you are not subscribed to our channel, you can search for “Sherwood Sch.
