Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
🍎 Celebrating Our Amazing Teachers and Staff: Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, May 6-10! 📚
As we approach Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, we invite each of you to join us in honoring the incredible educators who shape the minds and futures of our students every day. From their tireless dedication to their unwavering support, our teachers at Kenmoor Middle School embody the true spirit of excellence in education.
This year, let's go above and beyond to show our gratitude and appreciation for their hard work and commitment. Here are a few ways students and families can celebrate teachers:
Personalized Thank You Notes: Encourage students to write thank-you notes expressing their appreciation for their teachers. A few kind words can truly brighten someone's day!
Gifts of Appreciation: Small tokens of appreciation, such as a gift card to their favorite coffee shop, or a personalized gift, can go a long way in showing our teachers how much they mean to us.
Acts of Kindness: Encourage students to perform acts of kindness for their teachers throughout the week, whether it's helping tidy up the classroom, offering to assist with tasks, or simply offering a kind word and a smile.
Let's make this Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week one to remember by coming together as a community to celebrate and honor the remarkable educators who make Kenmoor Middle School such an extraordinary place to learn and grow.
To all the teachers at Kenmoor Middle School, thank you for your passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our students' success. Your hard work and impact do not go unnoticed, and we are immensely grateful for everything you do.
PBIS-April Recap
We want to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) events that took place at the end of April.
Our 6th-grade students kicked off the festivities with a carnival extravaganza. From games to prizes to tasty treats, the carnival was a celebration of fun and camaraderie. Seeing our students engage, laugh, and create lasting memories together was truly heartwarming.
Our 7th-grade students unleashed their creativity during the "Paint & Sip" event. With paintbrushes in hand and imaginations running wild, students immersed themselves in a world of color and expression. The atmosphere was filled with joy and inspiration as each student showcased their artistic talents and bonded over snacks and shared experiences.
Our 8th-grade students enjoyed the outdoors with friends! They were given the option of choosing to play basketball, listen to music and/or play other games. They also had a variety of snacks to enjoy such as popcorn, Taki's, juice, water, and ice pops.
We are proud of our students for their enthusiasm, positive attitudes, and exemplary behavior throughout these events.
As we look ahead to the remainder of the school year, students will have an opportunity to earn participation in end of year events! Each grade-level has planned exciting and engaging activities! Students will be invited to attend the events if they adhere to the behavior guidelines outlined in their grade-level behavior contract. Grade-level administrators distributed the contracts and reviewed them with students. Students have been instructed to share the information with their families before signing and returning the agreements. Contact your child's grade-level administrator if you have questions or would like more details and information about the events.

Autism Acceptance Month Parent Night Recap
We had the privilege of hosting an event in celebration of Autism Acceptance. The evening was filled with talent, creativity, and a sense of community that truly captured the spirit of inclusivity and support.
Families were treated to an unforgettable showcase of performances by our incredibly talented students. Each performance was a testament to the unique gifts and abilities of all of our students.
The event also featured an art showcase, where stunning works of art created by our students adorned the halls, showcasing their creativity and imagination.
Information about resources and support services available to families of students with autism was also shared!
The success of this event would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our staff, volunteers, and most importantly, our students. Their passion, talent, and unwavering spirit exemplify the true essence of our school community.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Autism Parent Night. Your presence and support made this event truly memorable, and we look forward to many more opportunities to come together as a community in the future.

American Legion Americanism Essay Contest Winner
Congratulations to 6th grade student Zyir Bangura who was the Division area winner of the American Legion Americanism Essay contest. For this contest, students (grades 3 to 12) explore the fundamental rights and freedoms we enjoy today. Each year’s contest has a different theme; one student in each category per division is awarded a prize.
This year's theme was: What does Freedom mean to me?
We are so proud of this young scholar! Congratulations!
Anacostia Watershed Muscle Restoration Project
Kenmoor students and their teacher, Ms Smallwood, participated in the Anacostia Watershed Muscle Restoration project. They returned 13 strong and healthy muscles to the Anacostia River. The muscles will filter sediments, nutrients, and bacteria and improve water clarity and quality.
Many thanks to Dr. Scott and the Schmidt Center team for their collaboration and partnership on this project! It was an amazing day for our young environmentalists.

Student Mediation
Cell Phone Policy
Students are expected to comply with our district's cell phone policy, AP 5132! At Kenmoor, we have implemented the following protocol:
- Students are reminded daily during morning announcements to power off and store away all cell phone devices. They can store them in a backpack or locker.
- If a student has their device visible, it will be confiscated by an administrator and it will be returned to the student at the end of the school day.
- If the student fails to comply with the cell phone policy and continues to have their cell phone visible, it will be confiscated and a parent or guardian will be required to pick it up from the school.
- If a student continues to disregard the cell phone policy, they will be required to check in their phone with their Administrator in the mornings and check out their phone at the end of each school day.
