Sharing our goals for the year: Spotlight on Goal One - PeaceBuilders
Last year we began PeaceBuilders, a wonderful school wide initiative that:
Provides a consistent message across our school about behavioral expectations,
Builds a sense of resilience and empathy in students,
Empowers students and staff to recognize peaceful behaviors at home, at school and in the community.
In year two, our Building Asset Team is working to provide teachers with a year-long curriculum that is different from last year’s curriculum and builds upon the foundations of the program. Led by Mr. Schneider and Mrs Zellner, this team creates lessons for teachers and provides whole school assemblies centered around the principles of the program.
As part of the program, your child can earn a “Peace Note.” Students are recognized for their work in building peace within our school. Please post these notes in a prominent place when they come home!
School Safety
Safety at Maple Dale is of the utmost importance to us. As required by the state (HB 178) we will conduct school safety drills throughout the year. We are required to simulate at least 1 full scale evacuation drill, such as an active threat in the building. We will be evacuating the entire building on these dates and practicing the full scale evacuation with police and fire presence. Other drills may be simulations with discussion, or practice lock-downs. We partner with the Blue Ash Police Department, at times, who walk our building from time to time. We will still conduct monthly fire and/or tornado drills in accordance with the house bill requirements.
It is always our intent to make sure we are as prepared as possible for a crisis to occur and keep our students safe. We appreciate your assistance in talking with your child about the importance of these drills and how critical they are to practice the drills. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Reinke or Mrs. Zellner.

Bessie Coleman
The Maverick House is named for a famous aviator, Bessie Coleman. Bessie was someone who demonstrated great perseverance. She followed her dreams and through hard work and dedication she became the first civilian licensed African-American pilot in the world.
Some fun facts:
Bessie was born in Atlanta, Texas in 1892. She was the tenth of thirteen children and her parents were sharecroppers.
Bessie attended a one room school.
In 1915, at the age of 23, Bessie moved to Chicago to live with her older brothers, who had both served in France during World War I.
Her brother John one day said, “I know something that French women do that you’ll never do---Fly!”
Because of this comment, Bessie decided to become a pilot. She had to learn French first so that she could go to flight school in France.
When Bessie returned to the United States, she knew she needed publicity to attract paying audiences. Her first appearance was an air show on September 3, 1922 at Curtiss Field near New York. In a plane borrowed from Glenn Curtiss, she was checked out in the Jenny in front of the crowd. More shows followed in Memphis and Chicago, and then in Texas in June 1925.
Bessie used her profits from flying to start an aviation school in the United States.
On a test flight in 1926, she and her mechanic took a plane up for a test flight. Tragically, the plane malfunctioned and the mechanic lost control. Bessie fell from the cockpit and died.
Only after her death did Bessie Coleman receive the attention she deserved. Her dream of a flying school for African Americans became a reality when William J. Powell established the Bessie Coleman Aero Club in Los Angeles in 1929. As a result of being affiliated, educated or inspired directly or indirectly by the aero club, flyers like the Five Blackbirds, the Flying Hobos, The Tuskeegee Airmen and others continued to make Bessie’s dream a reality.
