PRAYER
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back to our new school year for 2017 - 2018. We have had a great start to the year with so many happy faces around the school campus. I wish to welcome our new staff: Miss Allison Castro, first grade teacher; Miss Aimee Rose-Marsh, fourth grade teacher; Mrs. Marisa Horne, Grades 3&4 teacher assistant; and Miss Sarah Penalosa, Grade 2 teacher assistant. Mr Trevor Theurer is taking Grade 5 and junior high Social Studies while Ms. Lucchesi is on maternity leave. I also wish to take this opportunity to welcome our new families to our community and wish you every happiness at All Souls.
Mass participation as Catholics is very important when attending a Catholic school. We expect that all families will lead the example of taking their children to regular Sunday Mass in your own parish. We also ask that when we have our School Family Mass on the first Sunday of the month that we all join together to worship.
We have our Junior High Back-to-School Night tonight at 7pm in the cafeteria. This is a mandatory meeting for all the Junior high parents. The Grades K - 4 Back-to-School Night is next Thursday night at 7pm in the parish hall.
Picture Day:
Next Wednesday, August 30th is school photo day. We ask that all students are in complete uniform.
Safety Drills: During this week we are conducting our three major safety drills of fire, earthquake and lockdown procedures. We also conduct these drills throughout the school year so that students know what to do in an emergency.
New Bookkeeper: Mrs. Claudia Escobar has replaced Mrs. Reidy over the summer as our new school bookkeeper. I ask that everyone cooperate with her when it comes to money matters. Unfortunately we have been dealing with parents who have had large amounts of outstanding money. I would ask everyone to ensure that you meet deadlines for any finances. Our fundraising efforts are very important to the operating budget of the school, and I would encourage everyone to make an extra effort in this area.
Sending Money to School:
If you are sending money to school through your student, please ensure that the money/check is enclosed in an envelope with your child's name and grade and the purpose of the money written on the envelope. (Parent Student Handbook 8.9.16) If there is a form involved please also enclose the form.
Save the Children:
The "Save the Children" project is our annual collection of clothes, shoes, backpacks, medical supplies, toothpaste and brushes, notepads, pencils. and crayons over the next few weeks during September. All the items collected will be shipped to Guatemala where they will be distributed to the needy children in the outmost regions of the country. This year will be our third year with this project. I had the opportunity to visit the villages during the summer to see where our items end up. The children and families are very grateful for the generous support from our school community.
God Bless,

Miss J's Journal
"It takes a village to raise a child."
This well-known proverb brings to mind the fact that it takes teamwork to raise and educate children, especially in today’s fast-paced media-influenced world. You, as parents, are the primary educators of your children. We, at school, are here to support you in that role.
I hope, in what is year two of this journal, to continue to bring you insights into some of the common issues that may affect your children at different grade levels. What is developmentally appropriate for my child’s age? What is different at this grade level? Are other children doing these same things?
Do I know all the answers? Of course not. But I am happy to share what I’ve heard, seen, and learned over my many years at All Souls. Working together we can create, as stated in our school philosophy, “a spirit of understanding and cooperation in which teachers, students, and parents can grow and learn together.”
All the best,
Miss J
