The Parent Rebel Review
Week of August 5-10
Principal's Message
The Olympics never fail to captivate me. Watching the athletes compete with grace, strength, and determination always leaves me in awe. This past week, like many others, I found myself glued to the TV cheering on the US team to victory. But beyond the medals and podium finishes, my favorite part of the Olympics is getting to know the athletes and hearing their stories of unrelenting dedication, unwavering commitment, and remarkable resilience. One story that truly stood out to me was that of gymnast Suni Lee. Her journey to becoming the Tokyo Olympic all-around champion was far from easy.
Just a few months before her triumph, Lee was diagnosed with not one, but two rare kidney diseases. This news could have crushed her spirits and jeopardized her entire gymnastics career, let alone her dream of competing in the Olympics. But instead of giving up, Lee showed incredible resilience, fighting through her diagnosis and making it to the top of her sport. This year and a half of uncertainty and struggle left her at her lowest point, where she was unable to even think about competing at the Olympics. But she refused to let it defeat her, kept a positive mindset, and battled through the obstacles. And in the end, her hard work paid off as she helped bring home gold for her team and won a bronze in the individual all-around.
Lee's story serves as a reminder that through resilience and determination, anything is possible. And as a community, we must also embody this resilience for our students, always pushing forward no matter the challenges we may face. Let us hold onto Suni Lee's story as a shining example of strength and perseverance, and carry it with us in all that we do.
As always, I'm FOR you!

Nurse Sunshine's Corner
Hello parents
Let me introduce myself, my name is Sunshine Jimenez and I am the nurse here at Riverside MS. I have been a nurse for 14 years and I just completed my one year here at The Rebelion.
The needed requirement all students must have in order to enroll and attend school is an up to date shot record. All students entering 7th grade will require their meningitis and Tdap vaccines. These vaccines are mandatory in the state of Texas and proof of vaccines must be provided to the school nurse by parent and/or guardian. I understand circumstances may occur, so please reach out to me with any questions and/concerns.
I ask, if your son and/or daughter have any medical conditions that I need to be aware of, require medication during school hours, or any other health concerns please let me know.
I look forward to serving our students, our parents, and our Riverside community. I am here to help provide a safe and healthy environment for our Rebels. My office number is 915-434-7311.

Thank you for supporting your child's sports involvement, which fosters valuable traits for future success. Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build up strong children than it is to repair broken men.” Parenting an athlete can be challenging, but it's worth it. Here are nine ways to be a valuable parent on your child’s team:
- Stop Comparing: Focus on your child's personal growth rather than comparing them to others or yourself.
- See Other Perspectives: Understand and appreciate different viewpoints from coaches, parents, and players.
- Be Positive: Highlight your child’s strengths and efforts rather than focusing solely on the negatives.
- Always Grow: Continuously seek to improve your parenting skills through learning and self-development.
- Emphasize Responsibility: Teach your child to take ownership of their actions and attitudes.
- Be Supportive: Be present and involved in ways that align with your child's needs, while supporting the entire team.
- Value Kids: Appreciate your child’s intrinsic worth, independent of their athletic performance.
- Be Low Maintenance: Avoid being a disruptive or demanding parent; support the coach and team smoothly.
- Start Now: Engage in positive actions like volunteering, showing gratitude, and fostering team unity to contribute meaningfully.
Your involvement can significantly impact your child's experience and success in sports and beyond.
Speak Up for Safety
Students, your safety and well-being are our #1 priority! We have a new way for you to report concerns about bullying, cyberbullying, threats of violence or other safety-related issues. It's called Speak Up for Safety ... and all you have to do is call or text any time of day or night to make a report. Help keep all of us all safe by calling or texting your concerns to 915-237-9013, or by emailing speakup@yisd.net. Thank you."
