AUSD CONNECTION
NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Community,
As we settle into October, I am impressed with what our school communities have accomplished in just the first two months of the school year. Our students and staff members are doing incredible things, in and out of the classroom, and with each passing week, the energy on our campuses continues to grow.
In this issue, I want to shine a light on our outstanding drama productions, which are in full swing around the district. The arts are a vital part of the educational experience in the AUSD. They provide a creative outlet for students to express themselves, build confidence, and collaborate in ways that enrich academic and personal growth. Each time I watch one of the productions, I am just in awe of the talent and dedication of the students on stage and those who work behind-the-scenes.
San Gabriel High School opened our fall high school productions with a production of Alice by Heart - an immersive, musical retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Next up will be Mark Keppel High School’s fall production of Neil Simon’s Fools and Alhambra High School’s annual haunted house, Nightshade Manor (followed later with their fall production of Clue in November).
I encourage everyone to attend these and other student performances and witness the remarkable talents of our young actors and stage crew. Our arts programs not only highlight student creativity, they also strengthen the sense of community and belonging that make AUSD such a special place. Whether it’s through music, visual arts, or drama, the arts teach us essential life skills, including teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance – values we seek to instill in all our students.
As we move into the heart of the school year, I invite our families to stay involved and engaged. Our schools and PTAs have many fun activities planned this fall, but I also encourage you to attend informational meetings and academic opportunities, and to simply stay connected with your child’s teachers because we know that parent engagement makes a world of difference to your child and to the entire school community.
As always, thank you for your continued dedication to our students and our schools. Let’s keep the momentum going as we work together to create the best possible environment for our learners. I am excited about the meaningful learning and community-building that is happening in our schools and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Warm Regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Hazel Health (Telehealth Services)
Being mentally healthy during childhood means reaching developmental/emotional milestones and learning healthy social skills and how to cope when there are problems. Mentally healthy children have a positive quality of life and can function well at home, in school, and in their communities. The journey through childhood to adulthood can be filled with challenges that can impact a person's mental health. AUSD is excited to announce that we are continuing our relationship with Hazel Health, who provides therapists in a telehealth setting, that help children cope with their feelings. This service is provided at no cost to parents, insured or uninsured. Sign up HERE.
School-Based Mental Health Services
School-based mental health services provide essential support for students by offering accessible counseling and resources within the educational environment. These services aim to address a range of mental health issues, promote emotional well-being, and enhance academic performance. By fostering a safe and supportive environment, school-based programs help reduce stigma, encourage early intervention, and empower students to develop coping skills and resilience, ultimately contributing to a healthier school community.
Students may need school-based mental health services for a variety of reasons, including:
- Anxiety and Stress: Academic pressures, social situations, or family issues
- Depression: Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or a lack of interest in activities
- Bullying or Peer Conflict: Experiences of bullying or conflict with peers
- Trauma: Exposure to traumatic events (whether at home or in the community)
- Family Issues: Challenges such as divorce, loss, or financial instability
- Learning Disabilities: Struggles with learning which can lead to frustration and low self-esteem
- Behavioral Concerns: Difficulties with impulse control, aggression, or other behavioral issues
- Social Skills Development: Difficulties with developing healthy relationships and effective communication skills
- Substance Abuse: Students experimenting with or struggling with substance use
- Transition Challenges: Adjusting to new schools, changes in social dynamics, or life transitions
If you think your student is in need of school-based mental health services, please reach out to your child’s teacher, or your site's mental health or licensed mental health counselor, school counselor, school psychologist, or administrator.
