Happy Friday Wildcats!
This week our students participated in White Cane Safety Day on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Thank you to our O&M staff for planning activities such as Beep Baseball, cane decorating and other fun events.
What is White Cane Awareness Day?
White Cane Awareness Day was first observed in the United States on October 15, 1964, when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation recognizing the white cane as a symbol of independence for individuals with visual impairments. This observance aimed to raise awareness about the rights and mobility of people with visual disabilities.
Since then, White Cane Awareness Day has been recognized internationally and continues to promote awareness, accessibility, and inclusion for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Have a great weekend!

Welcome to the 7th edition of Dorm Happenings here at Howser Dorm on the Cooler and much Greener KSB campus. We are very thankful for the rain this past week that has made things much greener on campus. It has been a very interesting week here at the dorm and on campus.
On Sunday we welcomed the students back on campus as we began another edition of elementary short course and the nest was full of little ones this week and they kept us on our toes from the beginning to the end of the week. Also we were preparing for fall break and also the upcoming track season conference tournament, so the excitement was high for a great week on campus. Monday we were back to school with everyone, and we had a very good Monday as we had therapy dogs in the dorm with Mr. John aaron and we had great time talking to students and talking about things happening on campus. Then on Tuesday night we had a celebration of September birthdays, and we also had cupcakes and ice cream. The students enjoyed time in the recreation gym and lounge area to play pool, watch our new BIG SCREEN TV and to play disc golf, ride bikes and bounce on the mat in the gym. We were having so much fun on this night we actually stayed longer than we were supposed to, but nobody seemed to complain about the opportunity for more activity time. On Wednesday we took a trip to the mall as students got opportunities to practice O/M skills and shopping and budgeting skills as they were given money and asked to shop for items they needed and also to eat at the food court. This activity was an excellent use of life skills that we are developing in our students at KSB. Students were excellent in the areas of communication and budgeting their money and also on time management in meeting groups at certain places at required time. As we approached and prepared for Thursday many things took a change as the remnants of Hurricane Helene was making its way towards the Bluegrass state. The school began some early dismissal for dorm students who were going to be picked up by their home districts early and school would be cancelled for Friday. Unfortunately this also met that our track team would not be able to compete in the conference tournament in Ohio, this was a sad time for our track team as you could see and hear the disappointment in their body language, tone and discussion between teammates of not being able to compete in the end of season event. On Thursday we had a busy day and many changes were made but our dorm staff and students came through with flying colors and got everyone packed up and sent home safely for fall break, as the last students left the dorm around 8:00pm. As we close the book on the first part of the 24-25 school year at fall break, I would like to wish everyone a well-deserved and much needed fall break and before I leave I will leave this thought with you about this time of year.

Welcome back to the 8th edition of Dorm Happenings. We welcomed our students and staff back to the beautiful KSB campus this week after a beautiful and much needed fall break. Some of our students returned on Sunday afternoon to the Howser dorm and we were able to greet them with a meal of chicken tenders and fries and discussions of the many adventures they went on and places traveled over their fall break. After that we went to the recreation gym and Mr. Larry had actives planned with fooz ball, air hockey, scooters and of course the ever-popular bouncy mat. Also, those students had a treat of ice cream to top off the evening before heading back to the dorm.
On Monday, we welcomed back Ms. Annette who has been out on maternity leave and we got to see many beautiful pictures of her new edition to the family and to also hear how everything is going in the Abingawa family.
On Tuesday we had a great time as the students were eager to tell us about their fall break and all the things they were able to do with family and friends. We had an outing to the local park with the elementary and middle school students before supper time on Tuesday night. The high school students were excited to ride bikes and watch movie after goal ball practice and supper time. Wednesday night we had Mr. Ottis on campus as we had our 3rd scout meeting on campus to gauge interest and begin planning for future scout meetings and also looked over scout shirts, hats and merit badges. Great discussion from students on how to be involved in camping, first aid and high interest in learning how to put up and take down flag and fold the appropriate way. Wonderful student discussion on all the possibilities of the many different things' scouts can prepare them for as life skills and training.
Thursday night we had a field trip to Gallrein Farms as all the upper classmen traveled with Mr. Larry, Ms. Annette and Ms. Z and I to take a hayride to the pumpkin patch, pick out a pumpkin to decorate for the fall festival and Halloween Dance. The students also, shopped at the store, and restaurant and then got to jump on the Giant Bouncy Pillows on the farm. We got to see a beautiful sunset on the farm in the country. On our way back to KSB we stopped and had supper at Culvers Resturant in Simpsonville KY. This was the first time many of our students, and some of our staff, had ever eaten at this restaurant. The students were excited about the conversations and the number of people we met at the farm and the restaurant that asked them about what school they were from. It was another adventurous and fast week here at Howser Dorm, and it is great preparation for a very busy month here in the dorm with a fully packed recreation schedule.
We would like to recognize a very valuable member of our staff for this week, as we welcomed her back from her maternity leave. Ms. Annette Abingwa has been with us here at Howser Dorm for a little over a year and we are very blessed to have her working with our students here at KSB. Ms. Annette works well with staff and is always looking to give an extra helping hand to her co-workers and the students in Howser dorm. Ms. Annette enjoys arts/crafts, music, cooking and baking and outdoor activities in her free time. Her hobbies, and interest are traveling, gardening, photography and watching movies. Ms. Annettes favorite subjects to learn about are history, literature, arts, geography, and economics. The things she finds most rewarding in working with students is being an academic mentor, helping with student development and personal development, as well as leadership development. Ms. Annette is most passionate about students' academic success, health and wellness and successful career planning. Ms. Annette enjoys utilizing her skills in communication, problem solving and creativity to help students gain success in academics, social skills and life skills for future career success. The areas of dorm management that she finds most fulfilling is the opportunity to help students study and gain academic knowledge and collaborate with other staff members. Ms. Annette is great in leading and assisting with crafts, social events and parties here at the Howser dorm. Ms. Annette finds that a student's curiosity and eagerness to learn along with resilience and perseverance are very inspiring to her as a mentor for younger students. Annette is excited to be a successful team here at KSB. She said " It is a pleasure working with amazing leaders and people on such a great team member at this school.
These are the many reasons we find that Ms. Annette Abingwa is a very valuable member of our KSB/Howser Dorm staff team.
Until next time.
