"It's a great day to be a Woodchuck"
A message from Principal Straw
Gladys Wood Community,
Happy Belated Good Friday and Easter!
Bike to School Day is coming up May 7th. If you haven’t filled out a bicycle permission form, please go to the below link to print one and send in with your child or stop by the office to fill one out. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LfhhD2eTsHqsDYJ3CXWQk7R2DY8asNipV0CL2pYhvWg/edit?usp=sharing
We have completed our state AK STAR tests for the year for 3-6th grade students and we have testing for the kindergarten-2nd grade students on May 1st. Thanks to parents for continuing to make sure your child(ren) get(s) plenty of rest and nutritious food to eat to help them come to school ready to learn. These last 4 weeks of school will go by very quickly, and we want to give every student as many academic strengthening opportunities as we can.
Online registration for the 2025/2026 school year opens for returning students, Thursday, April 24th.
Returning students can be registered through Q/ParentConnection for the school year starting April 24, 2025 – August 14, 2025.* The Online Registration System works best in Chrome/Firefox/Safari browsers.
New to District students can register online starting July 15th. It is important that our Gladys Wood families register early to provide ASD leaders a clear picture of our enrollment. We currently have 287 students enrolled at Gladys Wood compared to 313 at this time last year.
Please make sure to register your child early, as enrollment drives our staffing allocation. If you need your Parent Connect information, please call the office for assistance at 742-6760. The class with the highest percentage of students registered will earn an extra recess with Mr. Straw on May 16th.
Our Kindergarten Round Up Event for Gladys Wood is on April 28th. If you can’t make it to this event, please call the school and ask to talk to Mr. Straw with any questions you may have about your future kindergarten student.
ASD continues to use an anonymous application called STOPit. There are posters in the front porch of the Gladys Wood School that you can scan with your phone and/or call 1-907-416-5005 to report any inappropriate behavior. Thanks for talking with your children about getting help and knowing that when safety is involved, it’s the right action to take.
Thank you also for dropping your children off at 8:45am on Monday and 7:45am on Tuesday-Friday and picking up at 2:30pm.
Next year we will have Campfire Alaska back at Gladys Wood if there’s enough interest. If you need after school childcare, check out the included flyer.
The Straw family wants you to know we continue to keep all of the Gladys Wood community in our thoughts and/or prayers and are thankful to be a part of your school family!

Allergy Season is around the corner
Our days are getting longer, brighter and warmer. With this transition to spring comes an increase in environmental allergens. At the same time, we still have Colds, Flu, and COVID going around.
For guidance on how to tell the difference between allergies and other respiratory illnesses.
.
Pollen and Mold are the most common seasonal allergens in Anchorage
.
In addition to Pollen and Mold, Air pollutants, especially smoke from wildfires, can increase environmental allergy symptoms. The Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Center of Alaska tracks Air Quality and pollen count.
.
Bicycle/Scooter and Skateboard season is here
Wheeled sports are starting early this Spring. Please remind your riders to:
· Wear a helmet- it is the law and required if riding a bike to school.
See the attached Gladys Wood Bicycle/Scooter Permission Form
· Watch out for gravel and ice in the morning
· Wear visible clothing
· Watch out for vehicles and never assume they see you
· Click the NHTS Bicycle Safety web page for information and videos on Bicycle Safety
