FJVD Weekly Info
We Live the Word!
From the Principal's Desk
Dear FJVD Families,
The Newsletter is a few days early this week - more on why that is later in this message. It seems as though we were just celebrating the accomplishments of our FJVD Class of 2020, and now we find ourselves already in early July. These first few weeks of summer have flown by as teachers and staff are hard at work drafting our Reopening Plan and making preparations for the 2020-2021 school year:
Reopening Plan Progress
The Fall Preparedness Team met on Tuesday, July 7th to review the initial draft of the Reopening Plan. Based on feedback from the team, the draft is currently undergoing revisions while also being assessed by a team of regional principals and the Catholic School Office at the Diocese of Providence.
Once revisions are complete, the plan will be shared in its entirety with families, and dates for town hall meetings will be announced. Stay tuned!
Please know that, while we are working diligently to develop a reopening plan that addresses all essential elements of safely reopening, ultimately the plan must be adaptable and amendable as various reopening scenarios are possible depending on the course of the virus.
Summer Updates - New Reading Program in Grades K-2
We are pleased to announce that, through a generous donation from Navigant Credit Union, we were able purchase a new reading program for students in grades kindergarten through two.
Teachers & staff worked on revising and aligning curriculum and materials in English language arts throughout the 2019-2020 school year. During this time, the K-2 teaching team reviewed numerous reading programs and settled on the MyView Literacy program. Purchased materials include a broad variety and range of high-quality texts, as well as strong daily opportunities for reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are aligned to content standards. EdReports.org finds that the reading program meets its high standards in alignment and usability across all three grade levels. We're excited to introduce this new program in the coming year!
Work on English language arts curriculum and materials for all the grade levels will continue through the 2020-2021 school year.
Summer Updates - New Vocabulary Program for Middle School Students
In addition, we have updated our vocabulary program for our middle school students for 2020-2021, adopting the Rooted Mind series. This program is based around the significant role Latin and Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes play within the English language. Studies show that students who have a command of roots and their meanings have a distinct advantage in vocabulary acquisition and retention, reading comprehension, and standardized tests. Rather than focus on rote memorization, the program instead encourages students to analyze word-meanings by utilizing their knowledge of the roots that form the building blocks of words. We're excited to see this new program in action!

Aluminum Can Tab Collection
What: Aluminum can tabs are being collected
Why: To support the Ronald McDonald House in Providence
How can you help? Save can tabs and send them in to Mr. Godin’s room.
Bottle Cap Drive
We’re excited to share that our school is part of the Coca-Cola Give program. This provides new funding opportunities to help improve learning environments for students. The best part? Donations don’t come out of your own pocket. When you make Coca-Cola purchases, you simply send in bottle caps or product codes from boxes of beverages and our school receives a donation.
All caps and codes should be sent to Mr. Godin. Codes will be entered on one account to gain larger and quicker donations.
Thank you!
