Curriculum Conferences Thursday, September 19th Starting at 4:30
The following message has been sent home via email:
We would like to extend an invitation for you to attend our Curriculum Conference/ Parent Information Night which is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 2024. This conference is designed to give insight into the curriculum and instruction that your child will receive throughout the year. This important guidance function will allow you to meet the teachers and open the lines of communication to ensure a successful year in the academic, social and emotional development of your child. You will hear from the teachers regarding the curriculum in all subject areas, and they will provide a brief overview of the topics that will be taught, as well as the resources that will be used throughout the year.
Teachers will also inform you about the expectations in their individual classes regarding such things as classroom routines, homework, and assessments. We are prepared to be as thorough as possible in the allotted time, but due to time constraints, limited time will be available for individual questions. Parents with specific concerns regarding their own children should make appointments to speak with the teachers at a later date.
On this evening, you will have the opportunity to attend one of the two identical sessions and follow your child’s daily schedule. (see picture)
You can access your child’s schedule on NYCSA (New York City Schools Account). We ask that you bring a printed copy with you on the evening of the conferences and follow the “Monday” course schedule.
Please complete this form to let us know if you will be in attendance.
Sincerely,
Mr. Kenneth Zapata
Principal

School Food Applications are Online
As many of you know, the “Family Income Inquiry Form” is a vital part of the application process. Please note that we still need families to complete this form in order for our school to receive money vital to many of our programs. Please complete this inquiry process online by using the following link:
https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application
PLEASE PRINT OUT CONFIRMATION PAGE and have your child submit this to their advisory teacher.
If you are unable to submit it online, paper applications went home last week.
We thank you for your assistance in regard to this matter. Once again, the application process enables us to get much needed funding for our school programs.
Arista (8th), Jr. Arista (7th), and Honor Society (6th)
Membership in the Paulo Arista Society is reserved for students meeting all of the following requirements:
1. Scholarship – Academic average of at least 91.00% in each marking period with no grade, in any subject, below 80 or “S”. Please note that a course grade of 79 or lower precludes a student from Arista.
2. Citizenship – No citizenship grade below “S” in any marking period. Satisfactory* record of attendance and punctuality. (*See lateness policy in Honor Roll Section, as lateness impacts citizenship.)
3. Service – The attainment of at least 20 service credits per school year.
4. Attendance/Punctuality – Students absent more than 8 days per school year are precluded. (If medical documentation (from a medical office/practitioner) is provided, medical-related absences will not count toward the 8-day limit.) Also, students who are picked up early from school five or more times in a given semester are also precluded from this recognition. Excessive lateness (more than 5 in a given marking period) precludes a student from Arista.
5. Application: All students who have met the above criteria and would like to be considered for induction into Arista must complete an online application that will be made available in April. As a required part of the application, students must write a 2-4 paragraph description of a personal accomplishment from the 2024-2025 school year for which they are particularly proud
Please see the Student Handbook for a more in-depth explanation of criteria for the Paulo Arista Society.
Arista Personal check in tool
A letter with the check-list went home this week via operoo. Administration felt it would be useful for students and families who aspire to join the ranks of Honor Society, JR. Arista, and Arista to have something at home to keep them on track with where they need to be. This is for home use only for students to self-evaluate.Please DO NOT send this back to school, it is for your use only.
Service Credits Explained
Each year, students are provided with an opportunity to be recognized for their volunteer efforts. School Service Credits are a way to recognize this dedication and to thank them for assisting in making our school a wonderful place.
The following provides you with an outline of how service credits are handled within our school:
- Binders for the “Service Record Cards” are distributed during the fall to each Advisory Class. The Advisory Class Teacher maintains the Service Record Cards on a weekly basis. Students may submit service credit slips in their Advisory Class at any time.
- Teachers receive “Service Credit Slips” that are used for a variety of service credit opportunities. The “Service Credit Slip” is then given to the student who will present it to their Advisory Class teacher. Service credit slips are maintained in the Service Record Binder.
- Students will have an opportunity to review their service credit status each marking period. The Advisory Teacher allows each child to track their totals accordingly.
- Students are required to achieve 20 service credits, along with a 91 average, exemplary attendance and citizenship, in order to qualify for Honor Society (Grade 6), Junior Arista (Grade 7), and Arista (Grade 8).(Please see ARISTA above or see student Handbook)
- Students can also achieve a Service Award, which is presented annually at the Service Award Assembly. This honors students who have in their career achieved 100+ credits (Gold Award), 75 credits (Silver Award) and 50 credits (Bronze Award).
- Students who volunteer their service outside of school, may bring in a letter of recognition of that service and present that to Mr. Herrmann in Room 339. This external service will be applied to their application for the Philanthropy Award in Grade 8.
- Service credits are only given for in-school service.

Help us create a most-welcoming atmosphere and a successful school year by encouraging and supporting your child’s participation in these events.
Morning Drop-Off Procedures
- The morning drop-off procedure for students is as follows: All students who are driven to school must enter the school yard from the Boulder Avenue entrance in the back of the school building. Students will not be permitted to enter the school yard at the Woodrow Road or Huguenot Avenue entrance. The Huguenot Avenue “driveway” entrance is reserved for students arriving via school bus.
- Pull all the way over to the curb before allowing your child(ren) to disembark in the morning. Please do not “double park” when dropping off or picking up children.
- Make sure that your child(ren) have their belongings ready in order to exit the car as quickly as possible each morning. This will help to keep the line moving.
- If there is a line of cars waiting to drop off students, please do not “cut” the line by driving around them. Your cooperation will decrease congestion and make pulling away from the curb safer and easier for those who are following protocol.
- After your child has disembarked, please wait for the car in front of you to pull out of line before proceeding.
- Please do not make U-turns on Woodrow Road or Huguenot Avenue. People making U-turns are putting their children, themselves and others in danger. Further, U-turns are prohibited in NYS school zones. According to NYS Vehicles & Traffic Law 1161B, no motor vehicle shall make a U turn within a school zone.
- If you are dropping off your child on the opposite side of Woodrow Road or Huguenot Avenue, please insist that your child crosses at the corner with the assistance of a school crossing guard. Please do not “cross” your child at any area other than the corner with the assistance of a school crossing guard. Doing so puts your child’s safety at risk.
- Our doors are open at 7:30 AM and the drop off area becomes most congested between 7:45 AM and 8:00 AM. If at all possible, plan to leave home early enough to arrive before 7:45 AM. Remember, school starts at 8:00 AM and students are penalized for excessive lateness.
- Please take kindly to the suggestions of school personnel in the morning. They are made with the safety of our children in mind.
- Please do not block driveways of our neighbors when visiting the school. Your cooperation in respecting our neighbors is greatly appreciated.
By adhering to the above procedures, you are helping to ensure the safety of all of our children. Your cooperation is not only greatly appreciated, but is necessary.
