Ms McIntosh's Update
A number of school visits have already taken place. Nearly all year groups have visited Brixton Library, with Year 2's visit taking place this week. Next half term, we are aiming to ensure that every child has their own library card, so that we can continue to develop the love of reading that is at the heart of everything that we do at Stockwell.
We are also organising our annual residential trips for Year 4 and Year 6. Mr Hirsch, Ms Bioksic and Mrs Fraga met with the Year 4 parents to go through the arrangements. Please make sure that you book a place for your child if you would like them to go along. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please let us know. We can help.
Year 6's meeting will be taking place on Thursday 19th October.
It is not too late to book a place for your child on either of these trips, so please get in touch if you would like your child to take part.
ASA started last week, with the range of clubs ever increasing. It's not too late to book a space as a few clubs still have places. We have an array of clubs, including: sports, crafts, cooking, music, games and languages. There is definitely something for everyone.
Pupil leaders have started to take up their roles across the school. The School Council met with Miss Mansell last week, to discuss their roles and think about how they will shape the year ahead. The House Captains will be doing the same this week. To find out more about all of our pupil leaders and their roles, click here, or scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter to the Pupil Leadership section. In our next issue, each group will tell you more about their roles and responsibilities. Watch this space.

MacMillan
On Friday, we held our annual MacMillan Coffee Morning (Afternoon Tea Party). The playground was full of parents, carers and children enjoying the Autumnal sunshine. Thank you to everyone that donated cakes, biscuits, pastries and other baked goods. The office smelt like a bakery all day!
Thank you to all of the staff and parents that helped to sell at the end of the day. There was a great atmosphere and it was lovely to see people laughing and dancing, while raising money for this very worthwhile cause.
A special thank you to the parents that helped us to set up and get everything ready. Your support was invaluable.
A HUGE thank you to Mrs Fraga, Mrs Bonsu and Ms Peres for organising the whole event. We have started the year in great style, providing opportunities for the community to come together while supporting those in need.
In all, we raised £509.96, which is a fabulous amount to be able to donate to MacMillan.

Jeans 4 Genes
On Friday 22nd September, we honoured Jeans for Genes day, coming to school in all of our finest denim. The children had learned about this important event in their assemblies that week.
Jeans for Genes' ambition is that every individual, and their families, can access the right support at times when it’s needed most.
Stockwell Primary school raised £171 for this brilliant cause. This money will go towards making Jeans for Genes' ambition a reality.
Makaton
We are still on our Makaton journey. The signs that we will be introducing next week are 'What?' and 'Where?'
A number of people have expressed interest in taking part in a Makaton Parent workshop. If you would like to learn Makaton alongside your child, please register your interest below.

Lost Property
We are already accumulating a fair amount of lost property. Please ensure that everything you send into school is labelled with your child's name and class.
We put out the lost property twice a week, in the courtyard at the front of the school. Please remember to check this for your child's missing belongings.

Our Learning Updates
EYFS
Pre-School
Last week, the Preschool children were learning about different feelings that related to the book of the week ‘Wemblerly Worried’. The children were using different resources to create collages of different expressions. They said how they were feeling using single words such as happy, sad and angry and worried. This supported their understanding of new vocabulary. The children were encouraged do observational portraits of themselves, showing how they were feeling, which supported their early mark making (the first steps towards writing). The children explored water to scoop and pour, helping to develop their hand-eye coordination, which is a stepping stone to their overall physical development, improving their fine motor skills.
In C&L, children will listen to simple stories from our key text, 'We All Belong', and develop our understanding of what is happening, with the help of the pictures.
In PSED, the children will be learning about diversity: what makes us different and unique, such as skin colour, types of hair, gender and culture. This will be achieved through different activities and doing observational drawing and discussions about themselves, so that children feel valued and belong.
In Maths, the children will take part in finger rhymes with numbers; this will be implemented during our registration time by counting heads and, during circle time, by singing nursery rhymes with numbers.
In Understanding the World, the children will be learning about the features of their and other families. We will be observing each other: what we look like and creating images of ourselves, our families and friends.Nursery
In Literacy, we are going to be reading ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and ‘I Can Share’.
In Maths, we are going to begin matching quantities to numerals. To do this we will need to practise counting, and learn what the numbers zero to five look like.
In Understanding of the World, we will talk a little about our experiences of different countries and any differences that can be seen between these countries when we look at photos.
In Expressive Arts and Design, we will continue to develop our drawing skills so that when we draw objects they are within an enclosed shape.
As part of our learning in PSED, we will learn about friends and what makes a good friend.
The Nursery Team would like to ask for the following donations:
Items for our Dolls
Baby clothes that we could use to dress our dolls
Baby bottles that we could use to feed our dolls
Baby brushes or combs
Dummies
Thank you
Reception
This week, in Literacy, we are reading the book ‘I’m Special, I’m Me!’ Children will then retell the story through role play. They will be encouraged to use words from the story to support their retelling.
In Maths, the children will learn that collections of objects can be sorted into sets based on attributes such as length, size and height. They will be given lots of opportunities to sort objects and put them into categories.
In Understanding the World, the children are going to talk about the seasons of the year and we are going to be discussing the differences between each season.
In Expressive Arts and Design, the children will make their own collages to represent what they want to be when they grow up whilst thinking about the process of collaging, resources and how to convey a character.
KS1
Year 1
In English, we continue to focus on the story ‘Lost in the Toy Museum.’ This week, we are exploring
characters and settings in more detail and we will learn how to describe them using exciting adjectives.
In Maths, we are comparing and ordering numbers within 10. We will be looking at the prices of toys to
find which are cheaper and more expensive! We will also start to learn how to use a number line.
For topic, our Geography lesson will be a walk around our local area on Friday 6th October. We will look at the different buildings and businesses we can see to help us develop our understanding of our community.
Linked to our topic of Toys, in Art, we will learn how to draw a teddy bear, step by step, looking closely
at the shape of each part of the teddy and sketching lightly with our pencils in case we make a mistake!
As part of our learning in PSHCE, we will reflect on the many things that make us unique and in RE, we
will have a class discussion to decide if belonging to a religion is like being part of a very big family!
Reminders:
The year 1 team would like to remind you it is important children read at home every day to practise
the phonics sounds they have been learning. Books must return to school to be changed on Thursdays.
Year 2
In English, we are going to explore how to write a diary entry. We will be researching Mary Kingsley and writing about a day in her life.

In Science, we will be exploring the different components in soil and the different types of soil. Additionally, we will be carrying out an investigation to find which type of soil is found in Stockwell Primary School . We wil discuss what this means for how the crops and plants in our school garden grow.
We will continue testing folding and joining techniques in DT, leading onto designing the illustrations for our 'Cinderella of the Nile' pop up books.
In History, we will be exploring the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and its significance to archeologists. In Geography, we will be investigating symbols found on ordnance survey maps and creating some of our own for key locations in Ancient Egypt.

In Art, we are working up to an amazing drawing of a Viking. This week we started to look into Kelvin Okafor and we critiqued his work. His drawings were so good they looked like photographs. We particularly loved his portrait of Skepta.
In line with guided reading and English we have been researching into the Stone Age during our History lessons. We have been learning about the different houses and clothes per period.Year 6
