Keeping Everyone Safe
Social Work Corner
A calming corner is a comfortable and calming space for children to go when they need some space, to calm down their bodies, and to take a time-in to process their big feelings. Your child may feel frustrated or upset that this is when negative behaviors occur. The goal is to give the child “time away” so that his/her behavior does not escalate any further.
Easy Steps to Create a Calm Down Corner!
- Find the perfect location.
- Add furniture such as a bean bag chair, or something comfortable.
- Add meaningful signage to give your child resources to help them self-regulate and manage their emotions.
- Calm down tools for your child to use such a play-doh, kinetic sand, timer, squeeze ball, etc.
Try implementing a calming corner at home !
Sincerely,
School Social Workers
