Swift - Slaybaugh Complex
Week of June 9, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Swift-Slaybaugh Families,
It is so hard to believe that we are here at the end of our last full week of school this year. This time of the year always moves so fast with all of the fun events going on, and then in a blink of an eye, it's almost the end. Teachers are working hard to ensure that students are enjoying their last days as a kindergarten, first grader, second grader, or third grader. Learning has continued while celebrating another successful year. Just a friendly reminder that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be abbreviated days for students. Please plan to be at your student(s)' bus stop early to pick them up. I hope everyone has an excellent week and we'll see everyone back for the last four!
Sincerely,
Rachel Casumpang
Principal

Flying High in Technology Class
Ms. Nardone’s 2nd and 3rd grade technology classes recently concluded an engaging two-week study of aviation and the principles of flight. During this period, the students participated in various hands-on experiments to understand how helicopters and airplanes achieve flight. They explored concepts such as lift, thrust, drag, and gravity, and applied their knowledge through practical activities.
In addition, the students delved into the design process through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, where they created and tested their own aircraft designs. This experience not only enhanced their understanding of flight mechanics but also fostered creativity and problem-solving skills.
Future News Reporters
The 3rd Slaybaugh Jr. Communications Academy recently visited our EHT High School Communications Academy as an end-of-year activity. The students had the exciting opportunity to experience the workings of EHT TV firsthand. They quickly got to work, developing their own story ideas and conducting interviews.
Under the guidance of Communications Academy Advisors Mr. Heenan and Mrs. Steet, along with the help of our Communications Academy students, they collaborated to produce an impressive video. The students took on various roles including writing, directing, operating cameras, using teleprompters, and working with green screens, among other tasks.
A special thanks to Ms. Nardone, Mrs. Alverson, and Mrs. Swigert for making this journey with the Academy such an incredible experience!
Can you dig it?!
Mrs. Zaccagnino's class transformed into tour guides for an exciting second-grade adventure. The 2nd grade ,young explorers embarked on a thrilling journey, digging for authentic fossils! They uncovered coral, shells, and even shark teeth, sparking their curiosity and excitement.
In a creative twist, the students then crafted their own fossils using air-dry clay and dinosaur footprints, bringing ancient history to life. The adventure continued as they fed the dinosaurs, cutting out food from newspapers to match the diets of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.
The students discovered that most dinosaurs were reptiles, so they explored the textures of alligator, lizard, and snake skins by making rubbings. To top it all off, they learned a fun dance called the "Dino Stomp," adding a lively rhythm to their day of discovery.
A huge thank you to Mrs. Zaccagnino's class for hosting this incredible event, and special thanks to Mrs. Stom, Ms. Moore, and Ms. Nardone for their invaluable support in making this STEAM-filled day a roaring success for the second grade!
