Straight from the Hardt
Hello Ridgeline Families- Happy Spring to everyone! First thing this past Monday morning I ran into one of our golf coaches and he gave me a hard time for my comment in the newsletter about “snow” for our spring athletes…after we woke up last Saturday morning and everything was white! Same for the Ridgeline Indoor Percussion and WinterGuard teams. For some reason these indoor teams have to spend most of their day outdoors rehearsing where there is space, and down in Oregon, they pretty much got dumped on with rain ALL DAY! I won’t do that again.
We’re truly into March Madness, not in the basketball sense… We’re enjoying our VERDO LOCO month and looking forward to the culminating event next Wednesday, March 26, 9:25am. This isn’t an open invite, per se, but we are always happy to have parents come by who want to see the show “live”. It will also be streamed and captured forever over our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/live/mbS4Idd882M?feature=shared) Set your alarm to watch it live. The extra madness is gearing up for next year with the master schedule, staffing, and programming. While, at the same time, taking care of all things happening right in front of us today!
We sent off our State Competitors in Speech/Debate as well as the Dance Team on Wednesday morning! Dance had a dominating performance last weekend and took first place in all three categories in a state-prep event. This is a fun tradition and great way to recognize the efforts of our students in their extra-curricular pursuits!
Back to bracketology for a minute… it has been fun to participate in the Chemistry bracket where the elements on the periodic table square off against each other leading to a single champion element. History put out a very comprehensive historical bracket from four different time periods involving people from our past who have made significant history for work they’ve done, inventions, innovations in many fields, across all aspects of social, scientific, political, medical, military history, etc… The twist on this event was the “accomplishment” was identified, but not the individual “historical change-maker” themselves. It was a massive history lesson rolled into the brackets!
I had a great moment this week, after school on Tuesday, about 4:00, I wandered into the theater to check on our cast and crew prepping for Cinderella. Lucky for me they were just about to start a large group rehearsal to the tune/scene where they find out the Prince is throwing a “ball”. It was so good! This 3-4 minute number was super entertaining and fun to watch. After a long day, there is nothing better than tapping into the energy, talent, and joy of our students performing. Rehearsal can be a grind- for sure. But, at that moment for me, it looked and felt like showtime! I was impressed—you DON’T want to miss out on this musical extravaganza coming in May. Tickets on sale in April!
I was also part of a panel of judges for our annual Poetry Slam, poetry contest. This is a fairly intense event where poets put their talented use of the English language and emotions out there to have the greatest impact on the audience. The words are very important, but so is the phrasing, timing, and tone of voice. The best ‘performers’ know how to use all of these techniques to deliver their message. Check out a bit more about the poetry slam below.
It’s Friday Night, and you know what that means! We will be having a blast at the NEON/Blacklight Verde Loco Mixer! Drop off your kids or kick them out of the house to get out and be social, in person, with their friends and classmates. 7-10pm right here in the RHS Commons. Please bring two or more food items as your ticket in.

Make it a great weekend! –Mr. Hardt

Cheerleader Tryouts- current 8th graders - Juniors
Girls Golf Team
The Girls Golf team sent 4 players to the Moses Lake Invitational at Moses Lake GC Monday. The day proved to be cold, but winds were calm for these first-time tournament players. Senior Jaycee Lawhead led the way for the Falcons placing 12th overall followed by promising Freshman Addie Jackson who placed 17th. The Jennings sisters were led by Junior Ella and Sophomore Claire placing 31st and 33rd respectively. Playing tournament golf can be nerve wracking and these ladies proved they can thrive in tough conditions. Well done ladies!
Poetry Slam
Monday brought our 4th annual Falcon Poetry Slam and it did not disappoint. The audience was treated to amazing performances by: Ava Bryant, Talene Rivera, Ally Aitken, Logan Crowley, Makayla Sweeney, Jazz Pemble, Claire Barney, and our first duo poem from Tate Krohn and Victoria Usab.
Special thank you to Mr. Hardt, Ms. Fraiser, and Mr. Gunther for being our spectacular judges.
Logan, Ally, Talene and Ava will be moving on to represent Ridgeline at the Valley Slam on Wednesday March 26th at 6:00 hosted at the Spokane Valley Library.
Congrats to ALL of our Falcon poets!

Spokesman Review & Current World Problems class
Mrs. Maxwell and Mrs. Bergman welcomed two reporters from the Spokesman Review to speak with Current World Problems students. Amanda Sullender and Elena Perry spoke about how they got into the field of journalism, the different “beats” they cover (Health & Education), objectivity and bias in news reporting, and the process they go through to write a story and bring it to print. Students engaged in a Q&A portion with the reporters; excellent questions evolved from both senior CWP periods. Thank you for opening our eyes to the world of journalism right here in Spokane! As a reminder, all RHS students have a free subscription to the Spokesman Review using this unique link: https://eedition.spokesman.com/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&pubid=401543a8-9972-4faa-ad73-019a34646bdc

Accounting 2 students
On Tuesday, Mrs. Demarest’s Accounting 2 students presented their Future of Accounting Careers projects to each other in small groups then received post-presentation peer feedback and answered their questions. To prepare, the students spent four days reading and researching four professional articles on the Future of Accounting Careers, chose a focus topic, and incorporated their own career assessment results and post-high school goals into their slide decks with a goal of articulating all of it verbally in their presentations.
It was so exciting to hear them engaging in valuable conversations with each other after each presentation. It was also an effective way to increase audience focus, attentiveness, and processing of the information presented which is often lacking in larger group presentations. The student feedback on this style of presenting was overwhelmingly positive, and allowed the instructor to observe, take notes, ask questions, and confirm quality project completion while keeping all students engaged for the class period. The implications of AI and its impact on the accounting profession was a major focus of their small group discussions.
Falcons, great collaboration effort in learning through small group presentations…followed up with in-depth discussions with your accounting class peers. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
