Learning About Social Hierarchies with Danna Evans, the owner of All Things E.Q.!
We had a special guest speaker on Friday, August 30th! Danna Evans, who created All Things E.Q., paid 5th Grade a special visit to talk about bullying and how to avoid common social pitfalls. Ask your child about the 3 ways to respond to tear-downs:
1. Own it!
2. Ask a question
3. Walk away neutral
E.L.A.
In ELA we have been learning about inventors, most nonfictional, one fictional. The students have been writing about different child inventors as well, who have created real inventions, some with their own patents!
Most have been amazing in cursive, and reading with their reading logs. I hope to see everyone turning in their reading logs soon. Fifth grade ELA is off to a great start!

Science
The students will be examining solubility. They will record data about the properties of matter in 5 different unknown substances. Then they will determine how solubility can help identify unknown substances.
Then, students will be introduced to acids; a group of substances with a reputation for being reactive. In the activity Acid Test, students will discover 2 ways to detect acids: they will use baking soda (which fizzes when mixed with acids), and a special "mystery" liquid that changes color when mixed with acids. Then, students will use those methods to identify common foods that are acidic.

Social Studies
We will be continuing our study of the Revolutionary War. Specifically, we will be answering the question: Should the Colonies Declare Their Independence From Great Britain?
The students will be introduced to document based questions (DBQ), which allow them to analyze primary and secondary historical resources to learn more about the United States.
September 11th is now officially known as "9/11 National Day of Service" ("9/11 Education Day" in the education world), and Social Studies teachers are required to present age-appropriate lessons on the history of this day. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about this, as we know it can be a touchy subject.
Notes From the Teachers:
Thank you to everyone who turned the beginning of the year forms in to us so quickly! A few of you should have recently received an e-mail and a paper copy of a request from our registrar to complete the required annual forms for the front office. If you have any questions about these, please e-mail her at: Patricia.FuentesDeLaGarza@dvusd.org
REMINDERS:
- Please be sure to check your child's P.A.R.K. Card daily. We have given so many positives! YAY!!! However, we have also seen an increase this past week in negative behaviors. Once your child reaches 5 infractions, he/she will need to serve a Reflection. Reflections are scheduled on Tuesdays at 3:45 - 4:30 p.m., or Thursdays at 7:45 - 8:30 a.m. The teacher who marks the 5th infraction will contact you to set this up, if needed. Thank you for your support with this.
- Our first pop-up P.A.R.K. Reward is coming soon! If you haven't logged in to check your child's grades, we encourage you to do so. Missing assignments (in any subject) prevent students from participating in these fun rewards, which is always a bummer for us and them!
- Pencils! We're not sure where they go, but the students are going through them at lightning speed!
- Please also consider sending in .7 or .5 lead if your child uses mechanical pencils.
