November Update
We hope that everyone had a restful Fall break, it was great to welcome all of our students back Monday morning! It's hard to believe we are already done a quarter of the school year. The students have been working so hard, we are incredibly proud of them and all their accomplishments. Don't forget that on Friday, November 29 at 3:30PM report cards will be available online through PowerSchool Parent Portal.
Throughout the past week, students participated in a variety of activities to recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. Quotes and tips were shared on morning announcements, students listened to and discussed various read alouds, lessons on relationships and connecting positively with others as well as how to be an upstander and not a bystander, and a whole school anti-bullying pledge quilt was created. Our theme this year focused on respect, through lessons, students discovered the true essence of respect and kindness—toward ourselves, one another, and the world around us. By fostering a culture of compassion, we create a safe, inclusive, and uplifting community where everyone is appreciated and feels a sense of belonging.

Literacy At Home
Helping your child as they learn to write can feel complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. Encourage your child to try out real-life writing tasks to help develop their skills.
Here are some practical ways to get your child writing:
- Write a grocery list
- Create a to-do list for weekend activities and chores
- Write an email to a teacher to ask a question about an assignment
- Write a Get Well card or a Thank You card
- Keep a gratitude journal
- Write a review for your favourite restaurant
Making writing authentic to what happens in daily life can help your child grow in expressing themselves or organizing their thoughts. For more writing practice ideas, check out this article.
Parking
As we enter the winter months, we want to ensure that our parking lot remains safe and accessible for everyone, including staff and families. When dropping students off or picking them up, please make sure vehicles are straight along the curb so that other vehicles are able to safely get by. Your cooperation helps ensure the safety of all students, families, and staff, especially during the challenges of winter weather. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and for doing your part to keep our parking lot safe and accessible!
Inclement Weather
With the winter season almost here, we have a few reminders for families:
· Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions. Students will be going outside for recess unless the temperature, including wind chill below -22.
· If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, as well as posting on social media and eips.ca as early as possible. · Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.”
· Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.
· When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.
For more information, contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151.
First Nations, Métis, Inuit Update
This week we were fortunate to welcome Dallas Arcand, a three time World Champion hoop dancer. Students in grades 3 - 6 learned about and practiced hoop dancing with Mr. Arcand and then all students attended a presentation late in the afternoon.
Classes have been learning about the meaning and importance behind land acknowledgements. With these teachings, each class will be creating their own land acknowledgement that will be shared during announcements and assemblies and will also be displayed in the school.
