MCCHS Friday Focus
298th Issue - August 23, 2024
From the Desk of Mrs. Debra Cunico
I am so happy to be starting another school year here at Marian Central Catholic! We are excited to be welcoming the Class of 2028 and new transfer students to Marian. It is also so refreshing to see our returning students walking the halls again!
The entire faculty, including a few new teachers, are primed and ready for a great school year. To prepare, our faculty participated in inservice days August 12th and 13th, focusing on data analysis, interdepartmental collaboration, policies and procedures, and school goals. Our teachers are also continuously working on developing rigorous lessons that provide students with a variety of approaches to their learning so that students construct their own knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and become real world problem solvers.
In order to ensure that your student has a successful year here at Marian, here are a couple pieces of valuable information. By now, all parents/guardians should have received an email instructing how you can log into the Parent Portal. When you log in you will find that you have real-time access to your students’ grades and attendance records. If you have concerns or questions about grades or any other classroom issue, please always go to the teacher first, as they have the most direct knowledge about what is going on in the classroom and their specific classroom policies and procedures. You can find many of the teachers’ contact information and webpages on the Marian website at www.marian.com. It is vitally important that we start opening the lines of communication early and often if your student is struggling in one or more classes.
Students who find themselves struggling in any class have several resources to assist them. These include utilizing their own log-in to the Portal, accessing their teachers’ Google Classroom or Teams platforms, seeking additional help from their teachers, or signing up for NHS tutors using the code below. The Guidance Counselors, the Academic Resource Department, Father Warren, and the entire Administrative team are also there to assist students with any issues! We are proud to work as a team to provide your students with what they need to succeed socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically.
Finally, please be sure to read the information below on our annual Back to School Night, coming up this coming Wednesday, August 28 at 7pm. We look forward to seeing you at Marian Central Catholic as you walk through your students’ daily schedule, meet the teachers and converse with Administration.
As I said earlier, I am very excited for this school year, stepping into the classrooms to see students grow and learn, and become the self-sufficient individuals we know they can be! Please know that my door is always open for your students and all of you.
Prayers for an amazing school year!

Entrance & Parking Lot
Attention Parents and Students:
Good news - we can enter through door #1 again starting on Monday morning.
As we navigate the busy drop off and pick up, we want to ensure everyone’s safety. Please remember to drive slowly and cautiously in the parking lot.
Watch for Pedestrians: Be mindful of students and parents walking to and from their vehicles.
Stay Alert: watch out for other vehicles and drive slowly!
Be Mindful of School and Pace Buses: Always yield to buses and be cautious when they are picking up or dropping off students. Never go around a school bus when they have their stop sign arm extended!
When Buses are present you must exit through the center turn lane.
Your cooperation helps keep our school community safe. Thank you for your attention to this important matter!

October Testing for Juniors
In the past we have used the October test date for our current Juniors to take the PSAT/NMSQT, a practice SAT test, while the freshmen and sophomores took the PreACT. What we realized is that this process did not allow us to measure student progress and growth over time. We decided to have all Juniors take the ACT test this year on Tuesday, October 15, at 8:00am. This will help us to align and analyze data more effectively and will also provide our students with an early indicator of how they might perform on the ACT in the spring. Students will not need to register for this test, nor pay any additional fees.
This decision will help our Juniors identify the areas in which further concentration and support are needed throughout the remainder of their Junior year in preparation for the spring ACT test. Marian Central is a test site for the ACT National Test on Saturday, April 5, 2025. More information on registration for that date will be sent out later this year.
We will continue to offer our Juniors the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT test, if desired. Taking this optional test gives students practice for the SAT test and provides a predicted SAT score. In addition, it is the only opportunity for our most academically gifted students to potentially qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.
The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered on Thursday, October 24, starting at 8:00am. More information regarding registration and test fees will be coming in early September.
If there are any questions about either the ACT or PSAT/NMSQT, please contact Mrs. Kelly Hilton, Guidance Director at khilton@marian.com.
