The Buzz
Summer Term - 18th April 024
Message from the Executive Headteacher
I hope you all had a wonderful break and I noticed that many parents were delighted to see the start of school once again! We are pleased to see the children back once again and enthusiastically resuming their learning.
This week we have reminded the children about the high expectations we have for school uniform and how important it is. I have noticed that some children are not wearing their school shoes and are wearing trainers every day and this is not acceptable. I would also like to remind you that football boots should not be worn at all as they are dangerous for other children. On PE days black tracksuit bottoms, leggings or shorts with plain black/white trainers.
Summer dresses can be worn but they should be green check in pattern. All hair bands should be plain and either black, red or green but they should not have flowers or other decoration on them.
If you are facing financial hardship and struggling to buy a piece of uniform please contact the school office or HISNA who have uniform items available for a small amount of money.
We are in the early stages of planning our aspiration week, are you an ex pupil or know of an ex pupil who would like to share their successes and achievements? If you are please could you take time to complete the form below so that we can celebrate these achievements with children for the HPP Aspirations week.
Have a great weekend and let's hope the sun shines.

Reporting a Child's Illness
When leaving a message that your child is absent you must provide full details of their illness as opposed to "unwell", in this case the office will phone you to seek clarification of the illness.
If your child has been sick or has an upset stomach, they MUST remain at home for 48 hours following the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea. The office will automatically sign your child out for two days so you do not need to call the school to confirm they are out on day 2.
If in doubt please call the office. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
The NHS has produced a very handy set of guidance for parents to decide if their child is too ill for school - link below.

🟨 Nursery
We have had such a happy start to the Summer term. The weather has been a little blustery but this didn't stop us having such fun outside climbing and chasing each other like the gingerbread man in our focus book - The Gingerbread Man.
We loved singing "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man" as we retold the story using lolly stick puppets. We made gingerbread men shapes using cutters out of playdough and added buttons for decoration. We made fox faces using tissue paper and paper plates and designed our own gingerbread men using pens and paints. In maths we counted buttons on gingerbread men.
We are getting so good at recognising numbers 1 to 10 and we loved our gingerbread man numbers 11 to 20 too. They are helping us recognise bigger numbers. It is so lovely to be back with our nursery friends!
🟥 Reception
It has been so lovely to see all the smiling faces back in the classrooms and it has been wonderful to hear all the fun adventures the children have been on over the Easter break.
During the first week back, we have really enjoyed reading 'The Gingerbread Man' and have been re-enacting the story using puppets, making sure we get our favourite line in... "run run as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
Reception have also been very excited to welcome some caterpillars into our classroom, we have been looking closely at them and learning about the lifecycle of a caterpillar.
Our handwriting letters this week are v, zz, and ss.
🟦 Year 1
The children have returned from the Easter break energised and ready for all the amazing learning that we have planned over the forthcoming weeks.
As you may know, this June all of our Year 1 children will be taking the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. All Children in England will take this phonics-based check at the end of Year 1 and the results will be used to determine how well children are performing in reading. These checks are important to us as they help us to track the children’s progress accurately and allow us to fully identify any child who is not yet fluently reading by the end of Year 1.
Although we give the children every opportunity to do this, it is still important that you have the opportunity to support your child at home. As such, we have created this Parent Phonics Pack which contains further information about the Screening Check, and a set of simple activities that you can do with your child at home to support their learning. Alongside this, there are also a range of online resources available for you to use at home.
At school, we allow the children every opportunity to gently prepare for this phonics test, by exposing them to the format, by allowing them to practice on their own and in a whole class situation, and by providing them with sound phonics teaching throughout their normal day-to-day lessons and learning experiences.
The parent pack and online resources can be accessed via the school’s website and Home Support page by clicking Year 1 Phonics, along with a variety of other home learning opportunities should you wish to work through these at home.
Should you require any further information regarding the Phonics Screening Check, please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher or email office.hisn@hpp.school
We are looking forward to a busy but exciting half term ahead and thank you for your continued support.
🟩 Year 2
Welcome back from the Year 2 team! We hope you all had a restful Easter break. It has been wonderful to have the children back in school and they have all come back ready and eager to learn. We have a very busy term ahead, filled with fantastic topics and events.
We started our term with a trip to Carlisle Park on Tuesday which was wonderful. Unfortunately the unpredictable weather meant we couldn't complete our art lesson there as planned but the children brought back a huge range of natural resources ready to begin printing later this week.
We have started a new focus book in English this week, linking to our topic- 'Journey through Asia,' with a folk story from India called 'The Tiger Child'. This is a wonderful story which caught the children's imagination explaining how cats became a human pet. We will be looking at features of the story, writing descriptions of tigers and villages in India before thinking about re-writing the story of The Tiger Child.
In Maths we have started the term thinking about Fractions; recognising a half and finding half of a number. We will next begin thinking about what a quarter and a third is, being able to recognise a quarter and a third and then linking the concept that 2 quarters are equal to one half.
The well being and safety of our children is everyone's responsibility. If you have concerns about a child please contact SPA on 547 5008 or out of hours on 0208 744 2442.
