Oak Hills Newsletter
Week of September 16, 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Last week, we began Star Assessments in Literacy. Next week, Classroom Teachers will launch Star Assessments for Math. Star Assessments are computer-based tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student. Each test adapts in difficulty based on the responses students enter. This helps to get a more accurate measure of student knowledge in a short amount of time. Once students complete Star testing, teachers will look closely at student results to determine what students already know and how to better plan for learning next steps. We will continue to monitor student growth over the course of the school year and will look forward to sharing results with you as part of Fall conferences coming up in November.

Emergency Drills
As part of our back-to-school safety learning, we are required to host monthly emergency drills, starting with an Evacuation (fire) Drill this past week, followed by our annual Bus Safety & Evacuation Drill this week and a Secure Drill wrapping up the month of September. The first secure drill will be on Friday, 9/27. Our safety drills give us an opportunity to practice for a range of emergency situations. You can expect to hear about monthly emergency drills this year, including evacuation (fire) drills, earthquake drills, secure drills, and lockdown drills. During the first month of school, teachers review safety plans with students beforehand, so our students are well prepared for a drill or an unexpected emergency situation.
Our district uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) from the I Love You Guys Foundation. (see flyer below). This approach to emergency preparedness offers a coordinated response, with shared language between students, staff and first responders. The response is flexible and can be used to address a full range of emergency situations. The SRP responses that are practiced throughout the course of a school year. When staff and students have opportunities to practice, they build the muscle memory to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
Please talk with your child at home about the importance of planning for safety emergencies. You may consider working with your child to make an emergency evacuation plan, checking your emergency supplies, or replenishing items from a first aid kit as part of your family conversation. These are some of the many ways we work to keep ourselves safe at school.
Please reach out to your child's teacher or to Ms. Hansen or me if you have questions.
Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Do

Student Attendance/Change of Going Home Plans
There are several ways to communicate with the office regarding a student absence. Parents can use ParentVue to log the absence. Simply click on the “report absence” button next to your student’s picture.
Or, parents can send a message straight to office staff via this form accessed by the gray “Report Absences” button on the Oak Hills homepage. While it is also helpful for parents to communicate directly with classroom teachers, doing this exclusively can prevent accurate attendance information from reaching the office by the time unexcused absence calls go out via the automated system.
Equally important is communicating with the office if a student will leave school early for any reason. Please complete this form accessed by the gray “Going Home Plan Change” button on the Oak Hills homepage. It enables staff to prepare students for pickup. Otherwise, a student may be at recess or in specials which will delay their departure as they go back and retrieve their backpack and other personal belongings.
Please also use this form for notifying office staff that a student has an alternate way of going home on a specific day, or if a change is permanent. This is especially important if a student is going home with a friend on the bus, or if someone else is picking them up. Students are only released to parents or guardians or previously authorized emergency contacts listed in Synergy. Please contact the office directly to update a name for addition or removal from emergency contacts.
